"Okay she is kind of funny," Whitney said, "I have to admit it."
I pulled my hands away from my face and narrowed my eyes at her.
"Alright you're out of here," I teased.
I reached over and grabbed on to her waist and acted like I was trying to pull her out of my bed.
She squealed as she pulled at my arms and tried to get me to let go of her.
"Don't you dare encourage her," I laughed as I kissed the side of her face.
"Well it was funny! I can't help it," she said defensively.
"See, there you go again," I said, "really going to have to kick you out now."
"Oh whatever," Whitney said as I loosened my grip on her.
I rolled over on to my back, keeping an arm behind her shoulders.
"What are you doing for the rest of the day?" She asked me as she held on to my hand.
"This is about the extent of my plans," I said.
"I'm jealous," Whitney said, "I have to go to some event for the University tonight."
"On a Saturday night?" I asked, "brutal."
"Yeah," she sighed, "I mean it's meant to be fun, but I'm kind of doubting that it will be."
"Doesn't sound like it to me," I said, "I'm hungry though, let's go make something for breakfast."
She nodded and we both got up and pulled our clothes on before walking out into the kitchen.
I started rummaging through the fridge trying to find something easy that I could make, and Whitney quickly found the coffee pot.
"Are omelettes okay?" I asked her.
"Yeah, that sounds good," she responded.
I went to work at the stove, and I felt Whitney's hands wrap around my waist a few minutes later.
"This has been fun," she said as she kissed my neck.
"Agreed," I said, "but don't distract me too much or I'll ruin our breakfast."
"Fine," she said as she gave me a squeeze.
I finished making our food and we sat at the counter and had breakfast and coffee together, it felt like we were an old married couple. I wasn't completely mad about it.
Once we were done, Whitney started to gather up her things and get ready to leave.
"You sure you don't just want to lay in bed with me all day?" I asked as we walked towards the door.
"Oh no, I'm sure I would love to do that," she said, "but unfortunately I can't."
"Damn," I sighed, "well at least promise me that you'll send me a picture of you in your fancy ass outfit for the event tonight."
"I think I can manage that," she grinned as she leaned in and kissed me, "I'll see you later this week."
I nodded as I held the door open for her and watched her walk away down the hallway.
Once she was gone, I flopped down on to the couch with a sigh. I realized that I was starting to feel things for Whitney that I really didn't want to be feeling. This is why I usually kept things casual and kept people at a distance.
***A few weeks went by, and Whitney and I continued to sneak around. We were spending a lot of time together at each other's places, and it was nice to at least have some privacy then.
The "secret lover" thing was pretty hot at first, but I had to admit that I was kind of getting tired of it. The end of the semester was coming up, but that still wouldn't change much. Whitney would still be a professor and I'd still be a student.
We were leaving her office one day after a meeting, and I walked with her out to her car. We stood there and talked for a few minutes before she got ready to leave.
"When are you going to come over again?" I asked as I leaned over the window of her car.
"Don't ask me that here," she whispered as she gave me a concerned look.
"Oh, right," I said as I stood back and looked around, "it's fine."
There were people around, but no one was that close to the parking lot.
"We'll talk later," Whitney said as she glanced around nervously.
I nodded as she put her window up and pulled out of the parking lot. We'd been so good about not saying anything when we weren't in private, I didn't know where my slip up had come from.
I shook my head as I walked back to the apartment, trying to clear my mind and get my shit together.
"Hey Bailey," Gabbie said as I walked in the door.
"Hey," I sighed as I set my bag down.
"You good?" She asked me.
"Yeah, I think I kind of messed up though, I don't know," I said.
"Why? What happened?" She asked.
"Whitney and I were standing outside talking and I asked when she was going to come over again," I said, "I think it just made her nervous more than anything."
"Oh," Gabbie said quietly, "well that doesn't seem like that big of a deal."
"I didn't think so," I shrugged, "I don't know Gabs, I'm getting tired of the sneaking around thing."
"I hate to tell you this," she said, "but that's kind of what you signed up for."
"No I know," I said with a sigh, "it's just getting old."
"Haven't things been going pretty well between you two though?" Gabbie asked.
"Uh yeah," I said, "I guess so, I mean it's not anything serious right now."
"Calm down," Gabbie said as she rolled her eyes, "that's not what I was trying to say."
"I swear you have a mild panic attack every time someone mentions a relationship or talks about you getting serious with someone," she continued.
"That's not true," I said defensively.
"Whatever you say," Gabbie said as she glanced at me again.
"I'm not - never mind," I mumbled.
"Sorry," Gabbie said, "I didn't mean to piss you off."
"I know, you're fine," I responded as I sat down on the couch.
"You um," Gabbie started, "you kind of just have a pattern, you know?"
"A pattern?" I asked her.
Well...yeah," she said hesitantly, "you know what I mean, ever since -"
"No," I quickly put my hand up and cut her off, "we're not talking about that."
"Sorry," she said again, "I was just trying to say that you kind of tend to um, you know, you pull away if things get too serious or move too fast."
"I don't want to talk about this," I said quietly as I looked down at my hands.
"You know I'm only trying to look out for you," she said, "and it seems like you really like Whitney."
"I do, but - I don't know," I sighed.
"I know you've had a rough time with relationships in the past," Gabbie said.
I glared at her and she got the message before she went into any further detail.
"Just think about what I'm saying," she continued, "that's all."
