i woke up the next morning, gus in bed with me. we'd both fallen asleep in yesterdays clothes. i caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, i looked a mess.

i snuck out of bed, careful not to wake him. i grabbed the tv remote to turn down the volume. we'd fallen asleep watching that 70s show and left it playing all night.

i ran warm water from the tap, washing away the smudged eye makeup from my face.

i tried to detangle my hair from the birds nest it had turned into.

"ow" i said to myself, tugging at the knots with my brush.

"hey", a voice startled me a bit. it was just kayla thankfully, gus did not need to see me in such a state.

"hey, how are you feeling?" i asked her

"anxious" she told me, "i know it's hard, but i promise i'll make sure everything's okay. you'll stay with me until you're eighteen if that's what has to happen" i reassured her.

"i don't want to do it today, but can you go get me some more clothes maybe later this week from moms house, just for school and stuff?"she asked.

i didn't want to see our mother but of course i'd do it. "yeah no problem, i'll take you shopping too if you want. i also totally forgot about school, do you have a ride or something? i have to work but i can at least get you there"

my bad, i forgot school still existed for her. "i can just walk" she said

"that's far don't be crazy, i'll give you uber money" i told her

"i can get her, if it's not a problem?" gus offered, appearing around the corner

"sorry i wasn't eavesdropping, i just woke up and overheard" he followed up.

i looked at kayla, waiting to see how she'd react. i didn't mind as long as she didn't.

"you don't have to, i don't want to be a bother" she shyed away

"it's really not a problem at all" gus assured.

"are you sure you wouldn't mind?" she asked him, "not at all" he said.

"thanks gus, that's really nice of you" she smiled, "i'm going to get ready"

"thank you, you don't have to do that" i told gus once kayla was over in the kitchen "sorry i look a mess by the way" i said, looking down, hoping he wouldn't notice

"it's all good, really, and don't say that. you always look good" he said, "stop it, no i don't" i wasn't trying to sound like i was fishing for compliments, i just really didn't know how to accept it from him. i still felt like a kid with a crush.

"farrah, you're so much more than gorgeous" he said, holding eye contact with me, "thank you" was all i could manage.

"i have to get ready to take kay to school, and i work later. are you coming with us?" i asked him

"am i invited?" he asked, "i guess you could be" i smiled.

-

the three of us got into my car, "can we get starbucks?" kayla asked from the back seat.

"sure", i was never going to turn down some caffeine

i handed her my phone to put the orders in, "get whatever you want", i told her, "you too gus".

-

i dropped her off at the front doors of what used to be our high school. "that's where it all began" gus said after kayla got out of the car

"hard to believe" i said

"hell boy is blowing up" he told me

"gus" i turned to him in excitement, "i told you so, im really proud of you" i told him

"that means a lot boo, i don't hear it a lot" he told me

"if it keeps going like this, i think i can really make a career out of this" he said, downplaying the success he had already achieved

"the world is gonna be yours" i told him, not once thinking about being careful what you wish for.

-

i took us back home, i had to get ready for work and his car was there.

"are you sure you don't mind getting kayla at 3?" i asked again

"promise" he said, "thanks a million again" i told him.

"go kill it at work tonight, let me know when you finish and i'd like to come see you tonight if that's okay?" he asked.

"of course just come here when i'm home and spend the night" i told him

"okay, i'll see you later", he said, kissing the top of my head before he left. it didn't really feel real that he was my boyfriend. he was too perfect to be mine
