ELEANOR'S POV

As I toured around town, my heart skipped a beat when I spotted Astrid in the distance.

A surge of joy washed over me, and I hurried over to greet her, eager to share the latest news and catch up on our lives.

But as I approached, I noticed something was off. Astrid stood there, cold and silent, her eyes distant and unresponsive.

I brushed off the initial unease, assuming she might be preoccupied with her own thoughts.

I greeted her with a warm smile, hoping to break through the barrier that seemed to have enveloped her.

"Hi Astrid! How are you? How are you and Thomas? Are you pregnant already? Where do you live now? Are you working? How's Uncle Matt?"

"Eleanor," she replied curtly, her voice devoid of its usual warmth.

Confusion crept over me, and I pressed on, asking questions about her well-being, her recent experiences, anything to bridge the gap that had formed between us.

But Astrid's responses were short, cold, and detached.

I couldn't comprehend what was happening. Astrid wasn't like this. We had always shared a deep bond, supporting each other through the darkest of times.

This sudden change felt like a betrayal, a rupture in our connection.

"What happened, Astrid?" I finally mustered the courage to ask. "Why are you acting like this?"

Astrid's eyes met mine, her gaze icy and piercing. She spoke, each word dripping with accusation.

"Do you really not know anything, Eleanor?"

Confusion gave way to a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. I searched my memory, trying to piece together any clues that might explain Astrid's behavior.

And then it hit me like a tidal wave.

Thomas. The mention of his name brought forth a flood of painful memories.

Astrid slowly sheds tears but anger is showing, "If you didn't reveal to my father where Thomas and I stayed, he... He could have lived... And" A tear dropped, "We could have escaped together"

"Astrid, I... I didn't know," I stammered. "I had no idea that revealing our location would lead to such consequences. I would never have willingly put Thomas at risk."

Astrid's gaze softened, her voice filled with bitterness.

"But you did, Eleanor. And because of that, Thomas is no longer with me. He could have lived if you hadn't betrayed our trust."

The weight of her words crashed down upon me, the guilt and sorrow threatening to consume me.

I had inadvertently played a part in Thomas's fate, and now I had to face the consequences of my actions.

Astrid's eyes remained hardened.

"I will never ever forgive you"
