Song of the chapter, Who is she by I Monster.

Artemis

It's been two days since our date. I can't stop smiling from happiness. Although, the situation is difficult. I can't let Nyx, or Diana out cause my magic always manifests during the shift. The last thing I want is to hurt someone.

Elli is always trying to get my mind off of it. I couldn't ask for a better bestie. Right now, I am sitting with the sisters, learning about the history of magic.

As they told me before, their mother was the first witch. She taught her ladies in court, and they spread it across the kingdom.

Some witches are born with magic, which indicates a strong family line. It also means that said witch would be powerful.

Anyone can learn magic, but it can take years to perform powerful spells. Most can achieve to move objects, pretty quickly. Those who are powerful, like the sisters or as they claim, me, can heal, open portals and do some pretty cool and terrifying stuff. Ripping another's magic essence is one of them.

Those who possess magic, live longer, sometimes even thousands of years. Like the sisters, they are around 3,000 years old.

Over the years, there have been many conflicts between witches. And with time, magic evolved to a more straightforward approach. Kesem is the highest form of magic; thus, the form is the hardest to learn.

"I can't wait to be able to use our magic freely! Imagine all the pranks we will able to do on the twins." Nyx says smugly. I can already imagine the things I would do to Ben and Melanie. I am the best sister in the world.

"Hey, beautiful." Dean kisses me on the forehead and sits beside me. I smile at him and kiss the top of his hand. "So, I have a question, when did the wars between the species start? I know we have the textbooks, but you were there." Rowena sighs, sadness morphing on her face.

"Every species wanted what the other had. Elves were hunted for their magical weapons, wolves for their shifting abilities, vampires for their immortality and witches for their magic. The other species went into hiding since they couldn't create armies. My mother tried to protect us all, but the attacks were relentless. Rogues also attacked us; they wanted power to help overthrow the wolf monarchy."

"The wars tore down my mother; she became weak and she almost died. Elves went extinct as far as we know, and their knowledge went with them. No one has seen an elven weapon in thousands of years. Eventually, the leaders of each species created an agreement. It took a few years to get everyone to agree."

"The wolves agreed to never hunt on other territories, the vampires created the two kids' law, and the witches agreed to never interfere with supernatural politics. So unlike vampires or wolves, we don't have a king or a queen. Each coven has its leader. We have an ambassador for interactions with the other species."

"But what started it?" I ask; so many questions run through my mind. I am a history nerd after all.

"As I said, each wanted something they didn't have. And now, I suspect my brother was the last straw." I grab a book on the table, and my hand makes contact with Rowena's.

"Don't you see? Mum, it's dangerous!" A younger version of Rowena is on her knees, begging her mum. Tears run down her face; sobs escape her. "Please, mum, don't leave me. I can't risk losing you!" Her voice breaks, while she sniffles.

"I'm so sorry, but I have to. If I don't, we will all be dead!"

Aradia hugs Rowena and leaves. I follow her, not caring if she can see me or not. We leave the castle grounds and go into the forest. She opens a portal and passes through him, and I tag along. Another witch is waiting on the other end, and Aradia follows her. Everything is eerily quiet, the forest knows something is coming. All the animals have gone into hiding.

They get into a cabin and start talking about strategies. I don't understand a word they are saying! I think it's Gaelic. I try to understand a word, but it's useless.

I hear it before I see it. The door detached from its place. Aradia immediately put a protective spell over themselves. Her instincts are incredibly fast and I look to the door to see who did it.

A witch came in weapon in hand. They exchange some yellings. Aradia's face is clouded with anger. Her eyes blazed with fire as the magical aura around her grew more and more by the second.

The witch at the door strikes first, but Aradia quickly blocks him. The ground shakes as he moves clumps of dirt and rocks to hit the two women.

"Sin agad uile?" Aradia shouts at him while throwing a ball of fire towards him. Two more witches join him and kill Aradia's friend so quickly that I don't even have time to react. Aradia doesn't let it distract her and throws blow after blow.

(That's all you got?)

Aradia pants from exhaustion. She manages to kill two of the witches, but the third takes advantage of her weak moment and delivers a fatal strike. My heart is racing. I can't do a fucking thing when I have these visions. I hate it, and I know I'm crying.

I know that this is what Rowena talked about.

Aradia lay on the floor motionless; the fire was dying, and cold winds soon froze the room. Her body is turning blue, and I don't fucking know what to do! The assailant ran, while I stood here with nothing to do or help for almost half an hour.

Just then, a figure walks in. His hood covers his face, so I can't see him. He makes a beeline for Aradia and picks her up. He whispers some words, and she immediately looks better, like she's healing!

As her colour returned to her face, the figure removed his hood.

It's David!

"Woah, Woah! Easy Artemis!" I gasp for air. "D...David." I stutter. My body heaves from the shock. "My god, you are freezing. Let's get you in front of the fire." Dean carries and puts me down, leaning my body onto his chest.

Rava gives me a glass of water and I gingerly drinks it. "Thanks."

"What did you see?" She asks me. "I saw Rowena begging your mum not to leave; she did anyway and was attacked. She was on the verge of death when someone came into the cabin and saved your mum. It was David! He saved her. Why would he do it?"
