Y/n POV
We were in the AV room. Dustin opened the box he used for his costume for Halloween. And inside was this weird slimey thing.
"His name is D'Artagnan" Dustin said as he pulled the snail creature out. "Cute, right?" He asked us as the monster like creature sat on his hand.
"D'Artagnan?" Mike asked.
"Dart for short." Dustin explained.
"And he was in your trash?" Max asked as she leaned over the table.
"Foraging for food" Dustin replied with a smile. "Wanna hold him?" Dustin asked Max and I.
"No, no" We both said as we packed away.
"He doesn't bite" Dustin said as he moved the creature towards me.
"I don't want to—" I said as I backed up but Dustin didn't care and placed him in my hands.
"Oh, god, he's slimy!" I groaned as I passed it to Max. Max made a gaging sound as passed it to Lucas. It felt like you were holding a slug.
"Ugh, he's like a living booger" Lucas said as he held the creature in his palms and passed it to Will.
"Ugh, oh, god!" Will said as he handed it to Mike. Mike held Dart in his hands and closer to his face.
He looked like a huge tadpole. And it would wiggle his tail back and forth like a dog.
"What is he?" Mike asked as he examined the slug like creature.
"My question exactly" Dustin said as he looked at his animal with amazement.
We all sat in a circle as Dustin explained everything. He put down the books he found at the Library.
"At first, I thought it was some type of pollywog" Dustin rambled on.
"Pollywog?" Max asked from right beside me.
"It's another word for tadpole" I explained as I watched Dustin closely.
"A tadpole is the larval stage of a toad" Dustin dumbed down.
"I know what a tadpole is" Max snapped at him.
"All right, then you know that most tadpoles are aquatic, right?" Dustin asked her. "Well, Dart, he isn't. He doesn't need water"
"Yeah, but aren't there non aquatic Pollywogs?" Lucas asked Dustin.
"Terrestrial pollywogs?" I asked making sure I was using the right words .
"Yep. Two to be exact. Indiana Semipalmata and trh Adenomera Andrea. Ones from India, ones from South America. So how did one end up in my trash?" Dustin asked.
"Maybe some scientists brought it here, and it escaped?" Max asked.
"Do you guys see that?" Mike asked as he was looking at Dart. "Looks like something is moving inside of it" Mike pointed out. In the back of Dart in looked like something was pushing at its skin from the inside.
Dustin shined the light on Dart and it screeched at us. We all jumped back and Dustin moved the light away from the creature, it jumped out of the cage we held it in and Dustin caught it before it jumped off the table.
"Whoa" Dustin said as he held Dart in his hands. "It's okay. It's okay" Dustin cooed at the creature. "I got you little guy. I know you don't like that. It's okay" Dustin rambled on and Lucas and I gave eachother a look. "And there's another thing. Reptiles, they're cold-blooded. Ectothermic , right? They love heat, the sun. Darr hates it. It hurts him." Dustin explained to us.
"So, if he's not a pollywog or a reptile..." Lucas trailed off.
"Then I've discovered a new species" Dustin announced proudly. He contained to pet the creature. I looked over at Will and he didn't seem okay. The bell rang and we all jumped up.
"We gotta show him to Mr. Clarke" Lucas said as we walked out the AV club room.
"What is he steals my discovery?" Dustin asked getting worried.
"He's not gonna steal your discovery" Mike said as he rolled his eyes at Dustin being childish.
"You know, I'm thinking about calling it Dustonious Pollywogus. What do you think?" Dustin asked Max. Why does Dustin always need Max's opinion?
"I think you're an idiot" Max said to him.
"When I became rich and famous for this one day, don't come crawling back, saying, 'oh my god, Dustin I'm so sorry for being mean to you back in 8th grade, oh, my god'." Dustin said as he mocked Maxs voice.
"I do not sound like that" Max said quickly.
"The only one I'm taking with me is Y/n" Dustin said as he put his arm around me. I giggled at him and we all walked to our next period.
...
Dustin, Max, Lucas and I all went to go show Mr. Clarke Dart. Dustin was still a little nervous because he didn't want Mr. Clarke to take his special discovery.
Dustin set down his box that he used for his Halloween costume and the rest of us watched with big smiles on our faces.
"This is the reason I was late for class." Dustin announced. Mr. Clarke went to touch and look at the box.
"Pretty neat. These doors function?" Mr. Clarke asked.
"Well, yeah, obviously. But it's not about the trap" Dustin said a little disappointedly. "It's what it's inside. Now, this very well may change your perception of the world." Dustin gushed about Dart.
"Consider my interest piqued" Mr. Clarke said with a smile.
"All right, first? Let's just clarify that...this is my discovery, not yours." Dustin said and i rolled my eyes.
"Dustin, Jesus! Just show him" Lucas said and i nodded my head along with him.
"I'm just trying to clarify—" Dustin said before i cut him off.
"Dustin!" I reminded him to keep going.
"Okay, fine" Dustin said with a smile. We were cut off before Mike and Will came barging through.
"Stop!" Mike shouted as they came through the door. "I'm sorry, Mr. Clarke. It was just a stupid prank." Mike gushed as he grabbed the box that Dart was in.
"What are you doing?" Dustin asked them.
"I told him to stop. We need to go." Mike said out of breath.
"Mike!" I said as he walked out do the room.
"Right now. Right now!" Mike screamed at us before he ran out of the room. I slammed my hands down and let out a huff. Before we all ran after him.
