It's an hour after Evie goes into the operating room when Jay and Jason arrive.

"Where's Evie?" Jay asks going over to Hondo and Sam.

"How's Steve?" Jason asks

Hondo rubs a hand over his face as he says, "Evie went to donate a piece of her liver to Steve. They are currently in the operating room. Apparently a bullet split into too many pieces in Steve's liver and he needed a transplant. So Pit being pit went and donated a piece of hers."

"Damn it." Jason and Jay both say in unison.

"It's worse than I expected. I'll be honest. But Steve's a fighter. He's gotta fight if not for himself for Evie, cause honestly I don't think she'd handle losing Steve at all." Hondo explained as Sam nods along, agreeing with the other man.

"I hope they both will be okay." Jay says, taking a seat next to Hondo and Jason sitting by him.

The seals and five 0 are all lost in their thoughts as the hours tick by.
Jay thinks about the last time Evie had to land a helicopter with Steve hurt in it. He hopes this doesn't make her spiral back into the days of hot sand under their feet.

See Evie has saved Steve more times Jay can count and Steve's done the same for Evie. It's just the way the two work. The guys always joke where trouble finds one of them, it finds both of them cause the other isn't far behind.

Evie struggled with the risk of losing Steve when they were in this position years ago. It was the mission before their last where the humvee blew up.

This particular time it was Steve in grave danger, Evie, Steve and Jay were in a helicopter trying to take out air threats and a missile hit the side that Steve was on. Jay honestly thought he was gonna lose both of them because he knows even then if there's no Steve there's no Evie. But thankfully they patched him up and got him shipped to Germany where he recovered with Evie by his bedside.

——

Jay is brought out of his thoughts by a doctor coming out.

"Family of Steve Mcgarrett and Evie Buckley."

"That's us." Everyone in the room says.

The doctor just chuckles, shaking his head as he says "they both did good, they will both make a full recovery."

"Thank god." Is heard all through the room.
Jay sinks into his chair and texts Erin to give her an update.

———

The next few hours is spent in recovery but when Evie wakes up and looks to her left and sees Steve looking back at her she lets a sob escape.

"Hey, Angel, I'm okay." Steve says trying to reach her but curses when he pulls at his stitches.

"I thought I lost you for good this time."Evie continues to sob.

"Never Angel, I'm right here." Steve says trying to smile but is sad to think he put her through this again.

"I know, I'm sorry." Evie says, wiping her tears away.

"No need to be sorry angel, I get it, I do." Steve says reassuringly.

"I know. If I ever put you through this hell I'm truly sorry." Evie says sniffing.

"It's okay Angel, I'm sorry I put you through hell today." Steve says sadly.

"It's okay, I love you Steve." Evie says reaching her hand out to hold his as he takes her hand gratefully.

"I love you Angel." Steve says as a line tear escapes his eye, as he quickly wipes it away.

Their peace doesn't last long, as the seals and Five-0 comes in and wishes them a speedy recovery.

"You had us scared there brother." Hondo says.

"I know, thank you for coming out to be with Evie, I truly appreciate it, guys." Steve says, he's grateful that their brothers was there for Evie when he couldn't be.

"Anytime man, we are family, we will always be here for the both of you." Sam says.

"Thanks." Steve says, voice thick with emotion.

Meanwhile Jay and Evie are talking.

"You okay sis?" Jay asks. As Jay and Evie has always been the closest besides Steve and Evie. Jay and Evie can relate to shitty parents and their PTSD, they have always been there for one another.

"Yea, I will be." Evie says matter of factly.

"If you need me to stay-" Jay starts to say but is cut off.

"No Jay, go home be with your family. I'll be okay, I'll call you, don't worry." Evie says, smiling softly at her brother.

"You better, I don't care what time it is, if you need me you call ok?" Jay says hugging her, being mindful of her incision.

"I will, don't worry. I love you brother." Evie says.

"I love you little sister." Jay says and hugs her one last time before going to Steve and

saying "take care of her if she needs me for a PTSD attack or anything you better call me."

"I will, no worries." Steve says. Jay fist bumps him then says "I better get going but take care of eachother. And congrats on the engagement."

"Thanks and we will."Steve says. Jay leaves then the rest of the seals say their goodbyes. Five 0 gets a case so they leave.

——

It's two days after they get home that Evie has a nightmare. She dreams that she's back in the desert, she can feel the hot sand on her body as she screams for Steve not to die. She jolts awake with panic, Steve is jostled awake and he sees the state she's in and quickly pulls her into his arms as she sobs.
"I-I thought I lost you." Evie is racked with sobs as she clings to Steve, her hand wrapped in his shirt pulling him closer.

"Shh, Angel I'm right here." He tries to soothe her.

"I can't- I can't lose you Steve."Evie whimpers.

"You're not going to Angel, I'll always fight for you, you know that." Steve tells her and she nods, she knows he will always fight for her.

"I love you, Angel." He says into her hair.

"Mhmm , love you too." She says groggily.

"Go back to sleep Angel I'm not gonna leave your side okay?" Steve states and asks. She nods and falls into sleep with Steve's arm wrapped around her body and her with the death grip on his shirt.
