"What are you two up to?" I call as I descend the stairs, my eyes locking onto Harry and Arlo, who are laughing suspiciously.
"Nothing," Arlo responds, his laughter tinged with guilt.
"Yeah, we're definitely not doing anything we're not supposed to," Harry chimes in, a cheeky grin spreading across his face.
I raise an eyebrow, sensing trouble and spotting a bag of candy behind Arlo. "Arlo, I told you no candy before dinner," I remind him, taking a seat on the stool across from them.
Harry jumps in to defend their actions. "Well, he really deserved it after doing all his math homework," he explains earnestly.
I turn to Arlo, surprised. "What? You finished all your math?" My smile widens in shock; Arlo has always hated math.
"Yes," Arlo nods enthusiastically, his face lighting up with a huge smile.
"Wow, buddy, that's amazing! I'm so proud of you!" I exclaim. He runs over and jumps onto my lap, hugging me tightly.
"Harry is right; you deserved a little treat for that," I say, kissing the top of his head with a smile.
Arlo's hug is warm, his small arms wrapped tightly around my neck.
"Okay, you little troublemakers," I say, releasing Arlo and standing up. "Since you've both been so productive, how about we make a deal? After dinner, we can have a proper dessert together."
"Really?" Arlo's eyes widen with delight. "What kind of dessert?"
I wink at him. "How about we bake some cookies? Chocolate chip, maybe?"
"Yes!" Arlo cheers, bouncing on his feet. Harry's grin widens even further.
"Sounds like a plan," Harry agrees, high-fiving Arlo.
"But no more sneaky candy before dinner, okay?" I look at Arlo with a smile.
"Okay," Arlo promises, still beaming.
We move to the kitchen, where I start preparing dinner. Harry and Arlo help out, and we chat and laugh, enjoying the time together.
As I stand over at the stove, stirring the pot, I hear Harry and Arlo whispering to each other. Before I know it, Harry pours a full glass of water down my shirt. I gasp, feeling the cold, wet liquid against my skin.
"Harry!" I exclaim, turning to see him holding the empty glass, looking guilty but also mischievous. Arlo is beside him, wide-eyed and trying not to laugh.
"I'm sorry!" Harry says, but his eyes are twinkling. "We couldn't resist."
I shake my head, laughing despite myself. "Do you two never learn?" I take the glass he is holding and fill it with water. "I am the wrong woman to mess with, because I am going to have revenge that is 100 times worse then what you did to me."
They run away screaming, and I follow them, walking slowly with a smile. Their laughter fills the house as they dart from the kitchen to the living room and back to the kitchen.
I quicken my pace and finally catch up to Arlo, wrapping my arms around him tightly to prevent his escape. With a mischievous grin, I empty the full glass of water over his head. He shrieks and laughs, shaking the water from his hair.
"Here," I say, handing him the empty glass. "Fill this up. It's Harry's turn now."
Arlo dashes to the sink, still giggling, while I set my sights on Harry. I sprint after him, and with a playful leap, I land on his back.
