Desserts

———

HANEUL AND HEESEUNG sat by the window in a cozy cafe, sharing a platter of desserts. The aroma of fresh coffee mingled with the sweet scent of pastries, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Haneul took a bite of her strawberry tart, her eyes lighting up with delight at the taste.

Heeseung, sitting across from her, was in the middle of recounting a particularly funny story from his childhood. "So, there was this one time I tried to build a rocket in my backyard," he began, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. "I was convinced I could launch it and reach the moon. The only problem was, I had no idea what I was doing."

Haneul raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "A rocket? Seriously?"

"Yep," Heeseung nodded, grinning. "I found this old chemistry set in the attic and thought I could mix up some rocket fuel. I even made a launchpad out of an old skateboard ramp."

Haneul laughed, already entertained by the mental image. "How did that turn out?"

"Well," Heeseung chuckled, "I mixed the chemicals and poured them into this metal tube I found. I set up the rocket on the ramp and lit the fuse. For a moment, everything seemed to be going well. There was smoke, sparks, the whole shebang. But then..."

Haneul leaned in, eager to hear the rest. "What happened?"

"The rocket didn't launch straight up," Heeseung said, shaking his head. "It veered sideways and flew right into my neighbour's garden gnome collection. There was this loud crash, and pieces of gnome were flying everywhere."

Haneul burst into laughter, nearly choking on her tart. "Oh my gosh! What did your neighbour say?"

"She came running out, waving her garden hose like a sword," Heeseung continued, laughing. "I panicked and ran, but not before she sprayed me with water. I was soaked and covered in garden gnome debris."

Haneul laughed so hard tears welled up in her eyes. "I can just imagine the chaos! Did you ever face her again?"

"Eventually," Heeseung said, still chuckling. "I had to go over and apologize. She made me clean up the mess and repay her for the gnomes by mowing her lawn for the entire summer."

Haneul's laughter echoed in the cafe, her face flushed with amusement. "You have the weirdest stories, Hee. I can't believe you actually tried to build a rocket."

Heeseung smiled warmly at her. "I'm just glad I can make you laugh. It's one of my favorite things to do."

Haneul leaned forward with curiosity sparkling in her eyes. "I've been meaning to ask, what's the city like? I mean, before you came back here, what was life like?"
