A Name She Dreads
———
THE AIR was crisp with the soft hum of traffic and morning chatter as Haneul and Heeseung stepped out of the café. They had just finished breakfast — Heeseung had insisted on ordering one too many pastries — and the two of them were laughing quietly, the warmth between them lingering even in the cool breeze.
Just as Heeseung leaned in with a joke about the croissant he failed to eat, Haneul's smile faltered.
Minho was standing by the corner of the sidewalk.
His expression twisted the moment he saw them. "Well, well," he said, voice laced with mock surprise. "Look who it is."
Haneul instinctively stepped closer to Heeseung, who picked up on her unease right away.
"Minho," she said evenly.
Heeseung's gaze flicked between Haneul and Minho, recognition dawning in his eyes like a slow, gathering storm. The realization hit him in waves — this was him. The ex. The one Haneul spoke about.
"Let me guess," he sneered, eyes scanning Heeseung from head to toe, "this is the famous Heeseung guy, huh?"
Haneul stiffened. "Minho, don't."
But Minho wasn't done. "So this is the guy you were always texting? The one who just happened to come back right around the time you decided I wasn't enough?"
"That's not what happened," Haneul snapped, taking a step forward, her tone sharp. "You know exactly why things ended between us."
"Do I?" Minho's voice dripped with sarcasm. "Because from where I'm standing, it looks like you were already half out the door with this guy before we even broke up."
Heeseung stepped in slightly, placing himself closer to Haneul, but he stayed calm, reading the situation carefully.
"You don't know what you're talking about," Haneul said firmly, her voice steady. "You were controlling, you never listened, and you made me feel like I was constantly walking on eggshells."
"Oh please," Minho scoffed. "You just didn't want to commit. You kept me around like a backup while you waited for him to come back."
"That's enough," Heeseung finally said, his voice low but firm, stepping fully between them now. "Back off."
"I wasn't talking to you," Minho snapped, stepping forward. "Stay out of it."
