A City He Tried to Forget
———
The city skyline unfolded before them like a painting brought to life — glinting high-rises under the soft midmorning sun, a patchwork of glass, steel, and motion. Haneul leaned forward slightly in her seat, eyes wide with quiet wonder as she took it all in. Everything felt alive here. The hustle of cars, the rhythm of footsteps crossing busy intersections, the hum of conversations drifting out of cafes and storefronts — it was all so different from the sleepy calm of her small hometown.
"I've only ever seen this place in movies," she murmured, her gaze trailing up a sleek building that seemed to stretch endlessly toward the clouds. "It's... a lot taller in person."
Heeseung chuckled from the driver's seat. "Welcome to the concrete jungle."
Haneul smiled, still pressing her forehead lightly to the glass as the car rolled through the city streets. "How do people even find their way around here?"
"You kind of learn to stop looking up and start looking left and right," he said with amusement, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. "Eventually your neck will thank you."
She laughed softly. "I feel like I'm in a different world."
"You sort of are."
As they passed a wide park with trees rustling in the summer breeze and kids running around, Haneul glanced over at him. "Where are we staying, by the way? You never told me."
Heeseung's lips curved in a secretive smile, eyes still on the road. "Don't worry about it."
"Heeseung," she said, narrowing her eyes playfully. "I need to mentally prepare myself if it's a sketchy motel with questionable sheets."
He laughed, the sound deep and warm. "You wound me. Do you really think I'd bring you all the way here and make you sleep in a roach motel?"
"I don't know, maybe that's your idea of a romantic getaway," she teased, nudging his arm.
"You'll see soon enough," he replied with a knowing smirk.
They turned off the main road and into a quieter street lined with tall trees and well-maintained sidewalks. The city noise dimmed into the background, replaced by the occasional chirp of birds and the soft hum of sprinklers watering lush gardens.
And then, Heeseung pulled up in front of a sleek, two-story house tucked behind a row of hedges. The exterior was modern — clean lines, large windows, pale stone, and deep wood accents. There were potted plants lining the porch, and the front lawn was perfectly trimmed.
