Taehyung sat in the sterile confines of Dr. Lee's office, the muted hum of the air conditioning the only sound breaking the silence. The room felt colder today, or maybe it was just the weight of the impending conversation chilling him to the bone. Dr. Lee, a seasoned oncologist with a gentle demeanor, sat across from him, looking over a stack of medical reports with a furrowed brow.
"Mr. Kim," Dr. Lee began, his voice soft yet firm. "I've found a specialist in London—Dr. Zeck. He's well-regarded in the field of glioblastoma treatment and has extensive experience with tumors like yours."
Taehyung nodded slowly, absorbing the information. "What can he do for me?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Dr. Lee sighed, setting down the papers and meeting Taehyung's gaze directly. "Dr. Zeck wants to meet you. He can't guarantee a surgery, but he's interested in running some advanced tests. The sooner you go, the better your chances might be."
A flicker of hope sparked in Taehyung's eyes, quickly masked by his usual stoic expression. "Thank you, Dr. Lee. I'll make arrangements to go as soon as possible."
With that, Taehyung rose from his chair, extending a hand to the doctor. Dr. Lee shook it warmly, giving a reassuring nod. "Safe travels, Mr. Kim. I'll be in touch with Dr. Zeck to provide him with all the necessary details."
Leaving the office, Taehyung immediately pulled out his phone and dialed his secretary. "Jimin, I need you to book me a flight to London for tonight and arrange a car to the airport," he instructed, his tone steady and composed.
Jimin, ever efficient, responded swiftly. "I'll get right on it, sir. Anything else you need?"
"No, that's all. Thank you, Jimin," Taehyung replied before ending the call.
As he made his way through the hospital's lobby, Taehyung's steps began to slow. The bustling environment around him seemed to blur, replaced by a vivid memory. He blinked, and suddenly, he was in a field of wildflowers—the same field he had been in during his previous episode. The vibrant colors swirled around him, a stark contrast to the harsh white walls of the hospital. He felt his knees buckle as he fell to the ground, desperately trying to grasp something solid.
"Taehyung! Tae, are you okay?" a familiar voice called out, piercing through the disorienting haze.
Taehyung blinked rapidly, the field fading away as he found himself back in the hospital corridor, breathing heavily, his hand clutching his chest. Looking up, he saw his brother-in-law, Jin, standing there with a look of deep concern.
"I... I'm okay," Taehyung managed to say, though he knew the words rang hollow. Jin knew him too well to be deceived.
Outside the hospital, sitting on a cold, metal bench, Taehyung finally let the walls around his heart crumble. He told Jin everything—the diagnosis, the grim prognosis, and the trip to London. Jin listened silently, his eyes welling with tears as Taehyung spoke.
"I have glioblastoma," Taehyung said, his voice shaking. "The doctor said I have three months to live. Jungkook knows, but no one else. I'm going to London tonight to see a specialist."
Jin reached out, pulling Taehyung into a tight embrace. Taehyung resisted at first, trying to maintain his usual composed facade, but Jin's warmth broke through his defenses. Jin had known Taehyung for almost half his life, having been with Taehyung's brother since high school. He had practically raised him while their parents were consumed with the company.
As they pulled apart, Jin asked, "What about Jungkook? Does he know about the London trip?"
Taehyung's usual stoic expression returned. "I'm going by myself," he replied firmly, standing up and straightening his jacket. "He doesn't need to know everything."
Hours later, Jungkook returned to the Kim household, exhausted from the day's work. He found Jin waiting for him outside, which was unusual since their sections of the family compound rarely intersected.
Jungkook got out of his car, noticing the way Jin's arms were crossed and the redness in his eyes, a sign he had been crying. "Jin-hyung, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice filled with concern.
Jin didn't beat around the bush. "Did you know about the tumor?" he asked, his voice trembling.
Jungkook's shoulders slumped, and he nodded slowly. "Yes, I knew," he admitted, his own eyes clouding with sorrow.
Jin's tears began to flow again as he whispered, "Why didn't you tell me?"
Jungkook's voice broke as he replied, "Taehyung asked me not to. He's trying to stay strong, but I can see he's struggling."
Jin wiped his face with the back of his hand, his voice firm despite the tears. "You need to be there for him, Jungkook. He's going to London tonight to see a specialist. You have to go with him."
Jungkook's eyes widened in surprise. "London? I didn't know he was going."
Jin quickly filled him in on what he had learned at the hospital, ending with a plea. "Please, Jungkook. He may act like he can handle this alone, but he needs you. Don't let him go through this by himself."
Jungkook's resolve hardened, and he nodded determinedly. "I'll go to London. I won't let him face this alone."
As Jin watched Jungkook rush inside to make arrangements, he couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. The road ahead was uncertain and fraught with challenges, but at least now, Taehyung wouldn't have to walk it alone.
