The camping trip had ended as uneventfully as it had begun. Jungkook and Taehyung's interactions remained painfully minimal, each avoiding the other as much as possible. As they returned to their everyday lives, the familiar rhythms of work and responsibility quickly filled the void left by their silent, shared agony.
Taehyung buried himself in his work, the relentless drive to push King's Company into the exclusive trillion-dollar club consuming his every waking moment. He moved through his days with a singular focus, his mind perpetually churning through strategies, deals, and endless meetings. The burden of leadership weighed heavily on him, but it was a burden he was determined to bear. Success was not just a goal; it was a necessity.
As Taehyung strode through the polished halls of King's Company with his secretary, Jimin, at his side, he exuded an air of authority. The employees they passed acknowledged his presence; some received a brief nod in return, while others did not. Despite the casualness of his pace, Taehyung's route brought him to the legal department's floor—unexpectedly, or so it seemed.
It was no secret that his husband, Jungkook, was the Legal Director, and although Taehyung insisted he didn't track Jungkook's schedule, he knew Jungkook was engrossed in a meeting. Through the glass walls of the conference room, Taehyung observed Jungkook in his element, speaking warmly and engagingly with his team. Jungkook's charisma was palpable as he sat at the head of the table, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his intricate tattoos—a testament to his bold persona.
Taehyung found himself captivated, the sight stirring a sudden awareness. Had Jungkook always been this attractive? The question lingered in his mind as he swallowed the lump forming in his throat. Turning to Jimin, he asked, almost absentmindedly, "Has Jungkook always been this attractive?"
Jimin's eyes widened in shock at Taehyung's unexpected question. "Excuse me?" he stammered, struggling to process what he had just heard. "Director Jeon? Umm..."
Taehyung, catching the bewildered look on Jimin's face, immediately realized his unguarded moment. "Never mind," he muttered, shaking his head slightly. "Forget I asked."
He turned on his heel, heading out of the legal department, but not before stealing one last glance at Jungkook. His husband remained deeply engaged with his team, unaware of Taehyung's brief moment of vulnerability.
Late one evening, Taehyung returned home after a particularly grueling day at the office. The house was dark and silent, the only sound the soft hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of the wooden floorboards. He loosened his tie as he climbed the stairs, his footsteps echoing softly in the quiet hallway.
As he passed by the door to Jungkook's bedroom, he noticed it was ajar. Curious and slightly apprehensive, Taehyung approached the room, pushing the door open gently. He hadn't ventured into this space since they had redefined their living arrangements, and the sight that greeted him stirred a mix of emotions.
The room was bathed in a soft, golden light from a small desk lamp. Jungkook was slumped over his desk, his head resting on his arms, his breathing deep and even. Papers and books were scattered around him, and the faint glow of the computer screen cast an ethereal light across his peaceful features.
Taehyung's gaze wandered to the ceiling, where faint, glow-in-the-dark stars still clung, a remnant of the nursery they had once imagined for their child. The memories of their plans, their hopes, and the love they had once shared flooded back, mingling with the ache of their loss and the chasm that now separated them.
He stepped further into the room, his eyes falling on the computer screen. The words "cloud tumors" and "recovery chances" caught his attention, and he leaned closer, his breath catching in his throat. Jungkook had been researching his condition, looking into treatments and prognosis. Taehyung's heart clenched with a surge of conflicting emotions. He had believed that Jungkook was indifferent, perhaps even eager for his demise, but this evidence suggested otherwise.
Lost in his thoughts, Taehyung didn't notice Jungkook stirring. The younger man blinked sleepily, raising his head to find Taehyung standing there, a mixture of surprise and something softer in his eyes.
"Taehyung?" Jungkook's voice was husky with sleep. "What are you doing here?"
Taehyung straightened, the moment of vulnerability slipping away as he regained his composure. "I saw the light and wondered why you were still up," he said, his voice cool and controlled. He gestured towards the computer screen. "What were you researching?"
Jungkook followed his gaze to the screen, his eyes widening as he remembered what he had been looking at. Quickly, he moved to shut off the monitor, a hint of panic in his movements. "It's nothing," he said, his voice tight. "Just some... work-related research."
Taehyung's eyes narrowed slightly, his posture remaining imposing and distant. "Mmh," he murmured noncommittally, the sound carrying a weight of unspoken thoughts. He studied Jungkook for a moment longer, his expression inscrutable. "You should get some rest," he said finally, his tone softening just a fraction. "It's late."
Jungkook nodded, his gaze dropping to the floor. "Yeah, I will. Thanks."
Taehyung lingered for a moment longer, the urge to say something more—something meaningful—bubbling just beneath the surface. But the walls he had built around himself held firm, and he turned away, retreating back into the safety of his own space.
As Taehyung closed the door to his bedroom, the isolation of his thoughts crashed over him like a wave. He leaned against the wall, his hand braced against the cool surface, struggling to steady his breathing. The realization that Jungkook had been researching his illness—had perhaps been quietly fighting for him—shook him to his core.
For so long, he had convinced himself that Jungkook no longer cared, that the love they once shared had withered and died. But seeing the evidence of Jungkook's concern, his quiet determination to understand and possibly help, cracked the cold veneer Taehyung had wrapped around his heart.
He pressed his forehead against the wall, the weight of his emotions pressing down on him. The grief for their lost child, the strain of his illness, and the distance that had grown between them—all of it collided within him, threatening to overwhelm his carefully constructed facade.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Taehyung whispered to the empty room, his voice breaking on the last word. He closed his eyes, wishing for the strength to bridge the gap between them, to find some way to reconnect with the man he had once loved so deeply.
But the path back to each other was shrouded in shadows and regrets, and Taehyung wasn't sure if he had the courage to take the first step. For now, all he could do was cling to the fragile hope that somewhere, beneath the layers of pain and silence, there was still a chance for them to find their way back to each other.
As he finally moved to his bed, the exhaustion of the day weighing heavily on him, Taehyung couldn't shake the image of Jungkook, slumped over his desk, fighting a silent battle on his behalf. And for the first time in a long while, he allowed himself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was still a flicker of light in the darkness that had consumed their relationship.
