Under the blazing afternoon sun, the flags of Amarabad were lowered to half-mast, fluttering somberly in the breeze.
From the minarets of the mosques, the muezzins announced the tragic news over loudspeakers, their voices trembling with sorrow as they called out to the faithful.
In the bustling markets, the busy streets, and the quiet alleyways, people paused in their daily activities, their faces paling as the weight of the announcement settled over them like a shroud.
A collective wave of grief washed over Amarabad, uniting its citizens in sorrow.
As the city mourned, the nobles of Amarabad gathered at the palace, lining up outside the Grand Hall to pay their last respects to King Kabir.
His body, ceremonially bathed and wrapped in a shroud, lay in state, surrounded by the scent of incense and the flickering light of candles.
Queen Sulthana stood beside the king's body, her eyes weary from grief while Urfi and Prince Sameer stood nearby.
The visiting mourners offered their condolences. Each face that passed by bore a look of profound sorrow, their whispered words of sympathy adding to the somber atmosphere.
As the line of mourners continued, Vikram approached Sulthana with a grave expression.
"Mallika Saheba" he greeted Sulthana with a slight bow, "The council members have assembled as per your request. They are waiting for you."
Sulthana nodded, taking a deep breath to steady herself. She leaned down to Sameer, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Stay with Urfi, I will be back," she whispered before turning to follow Vikram to the council chamber.
Just before entering the council chamber, she called out, "Vikram!"
"Yes, Mallika Saheba?" Vikram turned towards her.
"Has Mirza spoken yet?" she inquired.
Vikram shook his head, frustration evident. "No, Your Majesty. He remains defiant."
Sulthana nodded and gestured for Vikram to open the door.
As she entered, the council members rose to their feet in respect.
Facing the gathered council members, Sulthana stood tall despite the grief threatening to overwhelm her.
"We are deeply sorry for your loss, Mallika Saheba. May God accept the king's soul as a martyr and grant his family the strength to overcome this difficult time," the mufti offered solemnly.
"Ameen," the council echoed in unison as they took their seats, the room thick with tension and uncertainty.
Taking a deep breath, Sulthana steadied herself. "Thank you all for your unwavering loyalty to King Kabir and our cherished kingdom," she began, her voice strong and resolute.
