Amir entered the dimly lit infirmary, his heart heavy with the weight of his newfound responsibilities. The soft glow of lanterns flickered across the stone walls, casting long shadows that danced with the gentle sway of the flames. His eyes fell on Freya, lying weakly on the bed, her skin pale from the near death experience.
As she noticed his presence, a faint smile graced her lips, though it was clear she struggled to muster the energy to sit up.
Seeing her struggle, Amir quickly moved to her side and helped her sit up, his hands gentle but firm as they supported her frail form.
Freya looked up at him, her eyes filled with a mix of gratitude and confusion.
"I don't remember much of what happened after I was stabbed and fell,"Freya winced as she adjusted her posture, the pain evident on her face. Despite the discomfort, she pressed on, her voice trembling with the effort.
"But the healers told me that King Alden is dead... and that you saved my life." She looked up at Amir, her eyes filled with confusion and emotion.
"But why? Why did you save me?"Tears welled up, threatening to spill as she searched Amir's face for answers.
"You should have let me die. Anyone else in your position would have done just that," she continued, her voice thick with bitterness, her mind grappling with the incomprehensible kindness he'd shown.Amir held her gaze steadily. "Like I told you before, Freya, I'm not like other people. I did what I believed was right."
Freya's eyes bore into his, searching for an answer she desperately wanted but knew didn't exist.
Amir took a deep breath, his voice steadying as he asked, "But why did Alden try to kill you? What did you do that made him want to end your life?"
Freya's expression tightened at his question, a single tear slipping down her cheek. She quickly brushed it away, sniffing as she gathered the strength to respond.
"It's not what I did, Charming. I'm not just an Aldorian scout... I carry royal blood. I am an Aldorian princess," she confessed, her voice trembling as the weight of her secret finally came to light.
Amir's eyes widened in shock. "A princess?"
"Yes, how else do you think I knew about Princess Sabina being the odd-born, and about Dorath and the artifacts?" Freya replied.
"So... you're Alden's daughter? But... he kissed you," Amir said, cringing at the memory, his voice laced with disbelief.
"Eww, NO!" Freya shook her head slowly, "I'm not his daughter. I'm his niece, the child of his younger brother, Alfred. When I was 15, my parents were taken from me in a mysterious fire that engulfed our quarters in the palace. I was the only one who survived." Her voice quivered as she spoke, the painful memories rising to the surface once more.
