I sat next to Duke as we talked to our mother. She sat at the table with a blunt in her hand as she went through her magazine. She had her TV on but was barely even watching it. Duke at his cereal as he watched something on his phone.
I sat back and watched the dynamic of this ghetto ass family I had. I wasn't surprised to see my mother smoking once again for the third time since I've been here. I decided to come visit his mother just a hour before I arrived. I needed to talk to her about the episode she was having.
"So have you been taking your medication?" I asked coldly as I eyed my mother. I was concerned for her but also upset about the way she acted in front of my daughter. She promised she would do everything she needed to do prevent an episode. She promised to stay on top of her medications so she could see her grandchild.
Even though I knew my mother loved us, I didn't always feel that way. Especially because everything with her was so negative all the time. I wanted to look out for the good of my daughter and if she was going to be acting crazy like that she had no business being around my child.
I understood what Laila was saying but I didn't want to open up to her about my mother. My mother loved Kior and I knew she didn't mean to get it all fucked up. She doesn't understand missing three or four dosages would affect her but it did. She was a totally different person without that medication.
"Why do you care?" She asked looking over at me with a deep frown. Duke shook his head and scooped a spoonful of frosted flakes in his mouth. He knew that she would react that way and that's why he was against having the conversation in the first place. He didn't come around the much anymore. He didn't have time for that negative energy.
"I told you," Duke said looking at his older brother. "It's not worth talking to her. She not herself."
"And if we give up on her she never will be." Kiordre replied looking over at his brother. He knew Duke hated being around his mother when she wasn't herself but he had to atleast say that he tried. "You don't love us? You don't even wanna try?"
"Get out my face with that soft shit Kiordre." His mother said waving him off, he just huffed. It hurt him to see her so cold but he knew he had to give her space.
Duke just shook his head as he watched everything unfold. He was glad he didn't live at home with his mother anymore. He didn't like seeing her the way he did. He didn't like being around her when she was off her medication. He would try to help her get back on track but sometimes it just didn't work.
"Let me tell you something Mommy," Duke said dropping his spoon. "If you don't get your shit together. I ain't coming back over here. I ain't coming back over here to help you with shit. No medication, no groceries, nothing. I ain't helping you with shit."
Kiordre just looked at his brother. He never saw him that mad before. Duke was a very calm and cool person. He rarely saw things get to him and affect him but when they did he was a whole different person. It was like someone took over his whole mind and he couldn't control himself.
"Duke, don't be disrespecting me." She said looking at her son with a deep frown. She knew he meant what he said because Duke was always that type of man. He meant everything he said. "I'm your mother."
