The next morning, Trevon gently shook Kayli awake. She opened her eyes to find him looking down at her with concern etched on his face.
"Good morning," she mumbled, stretching sleepily.
"Good morning," Trevon replied, his tone serious. "Ma, I've been thinking about what we talked about. I think you need to go to the police station today and get a restraining order against Ezra. It's the best way to ensure your safety."
Kayli sighed, feeling a mix of anxiety and relief. "You're right, babe."
Trevon nodded, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "I'll be with you every step of the way. We'll go together."
Kayli got out of bed and began getting ready. After a quick breakfast, they headed to the police station. The drive was quiet, but Trevon held her hand, offering silent support.
When they arrived at the station, Kayli took a deep breath before stepping inside. Trevon stayed close, his presence a steadying force.
At the front desk, Kayli explained her situation to the officer on duty. "I need to file a restraining order against someone who has threaten me."
The officer, a middle-aged woman with a kind face, nodded sympathetically. "Of course. Please follow me."
They were led to a small office where Officer Parker, this time looking more impatient and less empathetic, greeted them. "I'm Officer Parker. Please, have a seat. Can you tell me what's been happening?"
Kayli recounted the events with Ezra, from the anonymous phone call, threatening messages and the fight they had. Trevon added details where needed, his voice calm and steady.
Officer Parker listened, but his expression remained detached. When they finished, he leaned back in his chair. "You know, these things often blow over. Are you sure you want to go through with this? It's a lot of paperwork and time."
Kayli felt her anxiety spike, but she remained firm. "Yes, I'm sure. I need to feel safe."
Parker sighed and began to shuffle papers around, clearly uninterested. "Alright, if you insist. But you should know these orders are just pieces of paper. They can't really protect you."
Feeling increasingly frustrated and anxious, Kayli struggled to keep her composure. "I understand, but I still want to file it."
At that moment, another officer, a tall woman with a calm demeanor, walked into the room. She noticed the tension and introduced herself. "Hi, I'm Officer Diaz. Is everything alright here?"
Kayli glanced at Trevon, then back at Diaz. "I'm trying to file a restraining order, but it feels like I'm not being taken seriously."
Officer Diaz nodded, her expression professional yet compassionate. "Let's get you sorted. Officer Parker, I can take over from here."
Parker shrugged, muttering something under his breath as he left the room. Diaz turned her attention back to Kayli and Trevon. "I apologize for that. Filing a restraining order is a serious matter, and we're here to help you through the process."
Kayli felt a wave of relief. "Thank you, Officer Diaz."
Over the next hour, Officer Diaz guided them through the paperwork and listened attentively to Kayli's concerns. She explained each step clearly and reassured Kayli that her case would be taken seriously.
Once the paperwork was completed, Diaz stood up. "We'll submit this immediately. You should hear back within a few days. In the meantime, if Ezra contacts you again, call the police right away."
Kayli thanked her, feeling a mix of relief and lingering anxiety. As they left the station, Trevon wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "You did great, baby. This is a big step."
