She walked beside me in silence, her heels were a rhythmic sound against the wet concrete. Her head arched up towards the echoes of a barking dog, the darkness shrouding the streets ahead of us. As we walked, I couldn't ignore the tension between us, encasing us like we were inside a sphere together, neither of us could speak. I glanced at her quickly, her breath forming a cloud in front of her mouth, the hairs on her arms stood up.
"Are you cold?", I asked.
She said nothing but nodded and I stopped, spinning myself to stand in front of her, causing her to halt. I pulled my jacket off my shoulders and handed it to her, encouraging her to take it. She smiled lightly and clutched the jacket and placed her arms quickly inside the sleeves. She wrapped the jacket tightly against her body. "I'm okay now," she whispered, her eyes meeting mine.
"Where are we going?", she questioned, peering over her shoulder at how far we'd walked.
"I'm taking you home".
"Wait", she halted again now, and I had to walk back a few steps to meet her again. "What do you mean, home?", she continued.
"To your apartment", I replied.
"Sam?", she choked out, "I don't think that's a good idea, can't we just go for a walk somewhere?".
I eyed her carefully, my jaw tightened. I smirk rose on my lips, "It's not what you think", I said carefully.
She raised an eyebrow then shook her head.
"You know if there is a critical problem, you ring me, right", I said, not asking but forcing.
"A critical problem?", she asked, her eyebrows furrowed.
"Yes. A problem. That you can't handle yourself. I will take care of it", I stepped into her, peering down at her. "If anyone touches you or hurts you, you ring me and I'll bring some people. You won't ever see him again".
She let out a heavy breath and took a slow step back. "What the fuck are you talking about?", she asked, her hand out flat in front of me. I stepped towards her again, this time her palm rested steadily on my chest. I grabbed her wrist softly, and lowered her hand.
"You know what I'm saying Skye", I responded firmly. "Anyone. A guy. Him".
She shook her head now, releasing her arm from my hand and took several steps back.
"You're starting to scare me, Sam. This isn't what I want. I don't want you breathing down my neck for the rest of my life".
"Well I don't want him breathing down your neck either", I said, my tone unintentionally menacing.
She scoffed and her eyes demanded my gaze. "What I do is none of your business, I've told you this before".
"That's what you think", I responded .
"You were the one who told me a week ago not to call you anymore when I need you!", she yelled, tears forming in her eyes.
I was lost for words in the moment but after a few seconds my mouth formed into a hard line "Let's go. Your apartment. Now". I grabbed her wrist hard and dragged her along with me towards my car.
