Past- After the accident (2025)
Her breathing was slow and steady as I diligently monitored her.
"She's going to be okay", the nurse said, walking into the room.
"I know...I just...", my voice trailed off.
"If it wasn't you she might not be here right now, honey", she replied, eyeing me carefully. "You did everything you could, all the right things", she continued, a warm smile arose from her mouth.
"When will she wake up?", I asked, my gaze shifting between the stitches in her forehead and the network of wires connecting her to the machines.
"When she's ready", the nurse responded again, her hand gently resting on mine.
"She's very lucky to have you", she said, smiling.
"Oh...she's not...we're not..." my voice trailed off again and I sighed heavily.
"Well, either way, she's one lucky girl", she nodded.
"Can I...stay here?", I asked, gesturing towards the chair in the corner of the room.
She nodded again, "Of course, stay as long as you need, honey. Make sure you keep talking to her, the doctors think she can hear your voice. It might help her wake up". I looked down at her again.
"Thanks", I said, smiling gently at the nurse.
"Let me know if you need anything", she said, kindly and left me alone with Skye again.
I pulled the chair from the corner and placed it quietly next to her bed where she lay silently. Her delicate hands rested against her sides and I peered up to her beautiful marble face.
I hesitated as I slowly grabbed her fingers and cupped her hand in between mine, kissing them gently. "Skye, please", I started to say when I felt a lump rising in my throat. My eyes were wet now, as I kissed her palm this time, breathing heavily into her skin. "I'm so sorry, Skye, please believe me. I need you back. I need you, I am nothing without you". My shoulders began to shudder as I wiped the tears from my face. I rested my head gently against her thigh, closing my eyes, desperate to feel her warmth again. I lay like this for hours, listening to her slow breaths, eager to hear her voice again.
"Sam?" she said, her voice coarse.
My eyes shot open and I lifted my head quickly.
"Skye?", I said, grabbing onto her hand, kissing it, "You're awake!"
Her confused expression turned to fear quickly as her eyes glanced around the room.
"What happened?", she asked, her breath starting to quicken.
"You...slipped and fell into the lake. We were...you were drinking...and I"...
"Leave now," she demanded, her voice now icy and cold.
"What? Skye, no, wait..." I responded, confusion washing over me.
"Leave or I'll tell the nurses to get security and they can drag you out of here", she glared.
I pushed back into the chair and stood slowly, "Okay, okay, I'm going", I said reassuringly. I turned and closed the door carefully behind me.
"Skye James", a voice spoke, "I'm looking for my girlfriend, Skye James", the voice was now desperate.
"Room 50", replied the nurse after checking the records on the computer.
I stood, placing my hoodie over my head and watched as he entered the room where Skye lay. I could see inside her room from my chair and I remained, watching carefully. He opened the door slowly and then strided towards her, embracing her tightly before grabbing onto her face and kissing her. I scoffed, shoving my hands into my pockets then abruptly turned and left the hospital.
