Ava Brooks

Anxiety was bubbling inside of me as I parked my car in the NYU parking lot. The first day to start my life as a college student, I was nervous to say the least.

I looked at the paper with my dorm room number and tethered my bags and boxes out of my car. It was the weekend before school officially starts and I wanted to get settled in. I walked around my car, to the dormitory I was assigned to and entered the building.

I had a bag over my shoulder, a box in my hand, and a small suitcase in the other. I was prepared to have all my belongings organized in my room by tonight.

I looked around the halls to the signs on the walls saying which rooms were where.

I looked down at my room number that I had gotten in the mail, along with all the other papers.

472A

I took a left and walked down the hall, looking at the numbers on the doors. I looked around, it was quiet, not many people were here. Most people were spending their last weekend with their families. I came from a very demanding household, both my parents were lawyers. It was expected of me to get perfect grades and be prepared for everything. You'd think that the daughter of such strict parents would be a goody-goody, who hadn't rebelled in her life, but I wasn't one of those girls who partied all night either.

My closet was mostly band shirts, ripped skinny jeans and combat boots. I listened to bands like Green Day, Blink-182, Panic! at the disco, All Time Low and Fall Out Boy. I liked the grunge-y style fashion but I liked to be girly too.

I really loved fashion and I wanted to design clothes for a while but my parents shot that dream down by saying it wasn't going to pay my bills. My parents want me to become a lawyer too but that's just not me.

I opened the dorm door and saw a girl laying down on one of the beds with headphones on. She noticed me in the doorway and sat up.

"Hey, I'm Charlotte, nice to meet you!" My new roommate smiled at me.

"Hi, I'm Ava and it's nice to meet you too!" I put the box in my hand down and looked around the room.

"Oh sorry I already picked a bed, do you mind?" Charlotte asked shyly.

"Not at all, don't worry. So why are you here on the weekend?" I asked putting my box on the desk and my suitcase onext to it. I put my bag on the dresser and turned to her.

"I already said goodbye to my family and I had nothing to do so might as well get settled in early, you know?"

"Yeah, I'm doing the same thing." I said putting my clothes in the dresser. I turned around and took my laptop and other things that belonged on my desk and arranged them neatly.

"So you like Blink too, huh?" Charlotte laughed seeing my band shirts.

"Love 'em." I smiled because my roommate had the same music taste as me.

We talked and got to know each other, while I organized my desk area below my bed. The beds had a desk and dressed space on the bottom and like a bunk bed, it had a ladder to the upper part which was where the bed was. It was pretty cool if you asked me.

We had hung fairy lights and wall decorations to make it feel home-y.
I put pillows on my bed and some on the couch we had in the room. We took a step back to look at our work and it was a cosy little room. Smiling at our hard work, we headed out to find somewhere to eat. We walked around campus, taking in the scenery until we found a café. We payed for our food and sat down to eat.

"I never caught your full name." Charlotte said taking a bite out of her sandwich.

"Ava Brooks, you?" I said sipping on lemonade.

"Nice, Charlotte McHanning." I nodded at her and looked out the café window.

"Do have any siblings?" I asked her, tilting my head.

"Yeah, her name's Grace, she's graduating this year." Charlotte's eyes lit up as she talked about her older sister, I could tell she looked up to her.
"She told me to stay clear of the frat houses and a certain group of frat boys." she said rolling her eyes at the thought of those types of guys. "They're definitely not my type." She finished her food leaning back on the chair.

Once we finished our food, we left the café and continued on our stroll through campus.

We were walking around until a group of loud boys walked passed us and a tall blond accidentally bumped into me.

"Oh, sorry babe." He smirked and winked at me then turned around to walk with his friends. The nerve of this guy.
