It's been two days since Asher's death. Two days since I broke my promise to my mother that I'd keep him safe. My brother is dead and the other one is still in shock. "Aiden, you have to eat." I said, handing him a can of peaches, it wasn't much but there's not much of the world left and we have to make due. He didn't respond. He sat there staring into the fire. "Aiden please." I begged, I didn't get a response though. He just sat there staring off into space. I sighed and stood up, someone has to keep watch and since Aiden is in no condition to be staying up, I guess it's my job.
"We should have saved him." Aiden finally said in a low tone. I felt myself tense up at his words. I looked down at him, his soulless looking blue eyes remained glued to the small fire in front of him.
"I know but we couldn't, not if we were going to live." I told him solemnly. I felt terrible for leaving him behind be we had no other choice.
"At least we would be together!' Aiden yelled loudly. He finally looked at me when he stood up. He was shaking with anger. I knew when he got angry it was usually easier to let him work it out on his own, he got his anger from his father. But unfortunately, this was a matter of life or death, he couldn't be yelling into the void. The dead might hear his angry calls, telling them supper is ready.
"Keep your voice down they'll hear you." I scolded.
"Who cares?! Our Brother is dead! If they hear us good! I'd rather die than lose anyone else!" his voice got louder and louder with each word he said. Those things, those "biters" as Asher would call them, they get attracted by noise. Aiden yelling isn't going to help us.
"Aiden please be quiet." He sighed and sat back down. I walked over to him and kneeled to his level. I wrapped my arms around him. I didn't know how else to comfort him, Asher was always better at this than I was. "I miss him too, and I always will but we have to remember the good memories we had with him, remember who he was." I told my little brother. I felt Aiden's tears on my shoulder. I rubbed his back and we just sat there a while.
"I'm going to miss him so much." Aiden said into my shoulder.
"I know I will too."
