To say Rolus felt happy, was an understatement.
He was elated. He still couldn't believe that Luke came at his own accord to willingly sleep in his room. He still felt in disbelief.
It's been a month since Luke has been coming around every single day. They have never talked, but Rolus was so grateful to Luke for just coming and spending the night.
He came in his wolf form of course, but that didn't change anything in Rolus' eyes. He was just grateful for his presence.
Sometimes Rolus would shift so that he could sleep next to Luke on the floor. Other times, Luke was not willing to be close to him, but that only happened for about five times only.
His Pack did notice the other Alpha, but they didn't say anything. There was still residual animosity towards Luke for terrorizing them, but it hasn't escalated far.
Rolus did notify his Pack that they were trying to patch things up as mates. That Luke was remembering their mate bond. It was not true, but in a sense, it was. Luke did not remember their mate bond, but he acknowledged that it was there. That's saying something, that he was willing to work towards something.
Rolus was sitting on the floor, leaning against his bed, hand lost in Luke's fur. His mate bond had already healed because of them sleeping next to each other for a month. All was well in his world, and he couldn't be happier.
Well, all was almost well, except that Sierra ambushed him when he went to the kitchen to grab his dinner. She was in the kitchen alone. Rolus assumed she was waiting for him.
He grabbed his plate from the microwave, then sat across from Sierra. He started to eat, waiting for Sierra to say what was on her mind.
It didn't even take long for her to spill.
"The Pack is restless," she said, watching Rolus closely.
That wasn't news to him. He knew some were uncomfortable with Luke's presence. Did he care? Yes. Yes, he did. But at the same time, he didn't want to lose Luke.
"But I told them that we are trying to patch things up with each other. What's wrong with this Pack? I have something good going on and they go and pull this shit?" He was angry now. This was a good thing for him and they wanted to jeopardize it?
Sierra held his hand in assurance, but he didn't feel assured. He ripped his hand out of hers, continuing to eat, even though the food was no longer appetizing.
"It's not how I feel, Rolus. It's the Pack. And I don't blame them. Eve's mate was killed because of your mate. How do you think she feels when Alpha Luke is just a floor away from her? How do you think Anna feels knowing that the person who is responsible for her son's death is sharing a house with her? Please think about your Pack. It's not unreasonable restlessness from them."
Rolus cursed under his breath, beating himself up for being selfish and not thinking how the Pack felt. He ran a hand through his hair, looking at Sierra. She was patient and offered him a sympathetic look.
"What do you want me to do?" he asked, voice small. No matter what, he was not willing to let go of his mate for the third time. Twice was enough.
"Don't let Luke come here." Before Rolus could protest, Sierra continued. "This is coming from a good place. For now, go to his Pack. I'm sure they will receive you better there. Just for a while until the Pack heals. Please."
It was a hard plea because as much as Luke spent every night here, he never shifted back to his human form. How will he convince Luke that going to his Pack was better because he's terrorized his Pack to the point of no return? What if Luke didn't receive the request kindly? What if he thought Rolus was chasing him away?
"I can hear you worrying, Rolus. But this is for the better. Let our Pack heal. Please."
"Ok. I'll talk to Luke," he replied, but the thought of talking to Luke about him not being welcome at his Pack made him squirm.
"Thank you. And what about the antidote? What's the plan?"
Rolus groaned. Since the time she told him what happened with the patient that used the antidote, they've never discussed the way forward. Rolus still didn't want to discuss it. From the way Luke was progressing, Rolus didn't think he needed it anymore. He was not going to risk his mate. It didn't matter if Luke didn't regain his memories. They will make new ones as they go. Rolus was not willing to risk Luke's life just because they wanted him to remember. If Luke was willing to work towards something, then Rolus would gladly accept that.
"Just keep it on you. For now I don't think we need it. I will speak with Luke when time wills it."
Sierra nodded. She stood up, fixing him with a look. "I'm assuming you're leaving now?"
"It's late, Sierra. Luke just got here," Rolus objected, crossing his arms.
"I know, Rolus. But like I said, your Pack is not comfortable in their own home. They have tolerated him for a month, but they can't take it anymore."
Rolus narrowed his eyes, the dots connecting. "Did someone come complain to you?"
Sierra didn't deny it. She just sighed and changed the topic. "Charlotte was reminding me the other day that we haven't had your mating ceremony. If you're up for it, in the near future, we could do it."
Rolus was baffled. "Excuse me?"
Sierra smiled, shaking her head. "You know how Charlotte is. She is already planning it."
"But what if the Black Moon wants the ceremony at their Pack?"
"Then we will have two ceremonies. I'm sure Charlotte will figure something out. Just know that when you two are ready to have your ceremony, then Charlotte will be ready to put things in motion," Sierra said, her soft smile assuring Rolus that things will be alright.
"Thank you, Sierra."
She didn't ask what for. Rolus was thanking her for so many things.
"That's what best friends are for," she replied, her eyes so full of warmth.
Rolus stood up, then went to Sierra. He hugged her, thankful to have a Beta like her. She hugged him back just as tightly.
