The cure didn't work, nor did it kill Luke. Luke was furious.
Rolus was just grateful his mate was still alive. Angry at Luke, but grateful.
So, when Luke accused Michael of being a fraud, Rolus was grateful the cure was behind them and Luke would give up.
They left after staying a week, waiting for Michael to monitor for any changes.
Luke felt cheated, but Rolus thought he cheated death.
When they arrived back at the Pack, Luke was full of anger, and resentment. They didn't even get to talk properly.
Luke spent days shutting everyone off. Even Rolus.
Rolus was there every step of the way, rationalizing with himself that Luke would get over the whole situation and come back to him.
It didn't happen. A month went by. By this point, Rolus had lost a considerable amount of weight, and so had Luke. Rolus tried to be there for his mate, he really tried. It was not enough.
Luke shut himself off, and went as far as kicking Rolus out of their bedroom. Rolus had to move to another room next to his mate's.
It was the lowest point of Rolus' life, but he was grateful he still had his mate. He was grateful to have a fully functional mate who survived Michael Rog's concoction.
When the second month passed by, Rolus could no longer hold it together. One day, he just lost it.
He had tried to be there for both their Packs, trying to fill his role and also stand in for his mate. The two Betas from both sides were supportive. He couldn't have held the Packs together without their help.
Everyday, Rolus trudged through the pain, and misery. He tried to assure both Packs that Luke was all good. He just needed a bit of rest from everything.
He smiled through the ache in his chest from the bond, the ache in his arms for not being able to hold his mate, the underlying fear that Luke would never bounce back, and the ache in his bones due to the fatigue.
He had last seen his mate a month ago, because his mate always locked himself in his room.
Rolus would always bring him a tray of breakfast, lunch and dinner. He would put them on the coffee table, and tell Luke the plans for the day, and how his day was going. At least Luke was eating.
"I miss you. I miss you so much you can't comprehend it," Rolus admitted. "When you are feeling better, please come to me. I'll always be here."
That was a week ago.
Rolus got word that one of Luke's Pack members found their mate. They immediately scheduled for their mating ceremony in a month's time.
The jealousy flared. Not the kind that wanted you to snuff out the excitement out of the mated couple. It was the kind where he wished Luke would snap out of it, and love him like his mate. He deserved to be loved too.
He deserved to have a fully involved mate that cared as much about their bond as he did.
He missed his mate, he missed his eyes, the slight upturn of his lips when he got happy, the little pout when he got annoyed at Rolus, the laughter in his eyes when one of the little ones said something outrageously funny, the crease on his forehead when angry, and all that made him Luke.
Rolus held it together for two full months. He couldn't take it anymore.
During one of his one-way talk with Luke during dinner, he just lost it.
"I promised myself I would let you be until you were doing better. I tried, Luke, but I can't take it anymore. I just can't," he had whispered the last part.
When Luke didn't say anything, as usual, Rolus packed up his plate. He then grabbed the tray with Luke's food. He went to the bedroom door, and tried the handle. He was going to kick down the door if it was locked. It wasn't.
The room was dark, except for the light from the open laptop.
Rolus switched on the lights.
The sight of his mate nearly made him fall on his knees. He put the tray on the side table, and approached the bed.
Luke was crying. Fat tears were running down his cheeks. His body was shaking uncontrollably, and he was looking at his mate with these shameful eyes.
"I didn't mean to shut you out," Luke said, wiping his tears away.
Rolus sat next to him on the bed, and helped wipe his tears. "I know." It hurt to see his mate in pain.
"And I didn't mean to hurt you, Rolus. I just wanted my memories back. I wanted to love you without any guilt and doubts. I was selfish. I'm sorry."
Rolus wrapped his arms around his mate, so relieved Luke let him in. "How could I not forgive the love of my life?"
Luke chuckled, his tears still staining Rolus' shirt.
When Luke had calmed down, Rolus let go. Before he could say anything, Luke grabbed his laptop from the bed. He turned it on, then gave it to Rolus.
"What is it?" Rolus asked, taking the laptop.
"I thought I should do something nice for you," Luke replied.
Rolus read through the document. His eyes filled with tears, biting his lip to contain his emotions.
It was the merger. The document was nicely written, with the two Packs' councils signatures, and also the Elders. Luke had already signed too. All that was left was Rolus' signature.
When he was done reading, he looked up at his mate. "When did you do this?"
"When I was sulking," he chuckled. "I managed to get everyone's signature. This is my apology, to show how serious I am of us. We have everyone's blessings to go ahead with the merger. We haven't gone through the finances yet. My lawyer suggested to get that over with before we file the merger."
"I don't care about the finances. All I want is for us to become one Pack. And the mating ceremony, of course. We never had an official one. We should have the ceremony after we have finalized the merger," Rolus suggested.
Luke was still smiling.
Rolus slept well for the first time in two months, his mate next to him. He knew it was not going to be easy moving forward, and the long way of finalizing the merger and making difficult decisions of building a new Pack House, what to do with the existing ones, and resistance from some members.
All he knew was that as long as they held each other's hands through it all, they would be victorious.
