It was a struggle for Luke to fall asleep without Rolus by his side. He kept replaying the last few weeks over and over again to see if he did anything wrong. He couldn't find anything wrong.
He didn't understand why Rolus would want a mate who had lost memories. Wasn't Luke a whole new person without his memories?
Why was it so hard for Rolus to understand how he felt? Luke wanted to know how it felt like to get accepted by his mate, how it felt like to realise Rolus was his mate. How it felt like to kiss for the first time. How it felt to get held by his mate for the first time, and how it felt when Rolus chose him over his wellbeing and Pack.
Those moments and feelings defined a person. Luke wanted that. He didnt want to spend the rest of his life wondering about the whatifs.
So, he tossed and turned, sleep evading him everytime it slithered back.
When the first light came through the window, it found Luke ready for it. He didn't sleep well. He was already showered, and ready for the day. Whatever ready meant.
With the first light of the morning, it brought Rolus back. He came into the room without a greeting or a glance at Luke.
Luke got off the bed, following Rolus into the bathroom. Their eyes met on the bathroom mirror. Whilst Luke's eyes were red with lack of sleep, Rolus' were red with crying. Luke's heart shattered at the realisation.
"Rolus," he whispered, wrapping his arms around Rolus' waist, looking at both of them on the mirror.
Rolus sighed, turning around to face him. He rested his head on Luke's shoulder, savouring the moment.
They stayed like that, with Luke's arms around Rolus' waist, and Rolus resting his head on his mate's shoulder.
"I love you," Rolus mumbled against his shoulder.
Luke's heart melted. He ran his hand through Rolus' hair, saying the four words Rolus' didn't have the luxury of hearing often. 1"I love you too."
They stayed like that for a while, but eventually had to separate. Luke could see Rolus' eyes were no longer the sad ones he saw a few minutes ago. "I love you," Luke said, the finality in his voice making Rolus smile.
Rolus smiled, then leaned in for a kiss. Luke could feel the love Rolus had for him in the kiss, and the uncertainty of their future. He also felt rhe tears from Rolus, on his face.
He felt the sobs against his lips, the hurt and pain clear when Rolus spoke against his lips. "You can go ahead with the cure."
Sobs wracked Rolus' body, his face nestled against Luke's neck.
Luke felt like he was losing Rolus. He could see Rolus had fully accepted the fact Luke was not backing down, and that ruined Luke. It shattered him.
Luke's arms were tight around his mate, a reassurance that he was going to come out unscathed. "Thank you," Luke said, sealing the final nail to the coffin.
When Rolus' crying subsided, he removed himself from Luke, smiling with a wobbly smile. He wiped Luke's teary eyes, then kissed him briefly before turning around and washing his face.
Luke watched him on the mirror, his heart already in pieces when Rolus' caught his eye and smiled.
Luke turned around and left the bathroom. He couldn't stand that he was the reason for Rolus' tears.
He made the bed, tried to tidy around and packed their clothes in the wardrobe.
Rolus never came out of the bathroom.
______
It was around nine when a knock came at the door. Before Luke could answer, Beta Lois opened the door.
"Good morning," she greeted, sitting next to Luke.
