After Rolus told his Council about the cure, they exploded. Zachariah kept quiet like he usually did. Rolus knew Zachariah had a lot to say, but he usually said it when he knew it was absolutely necessary.
"Is he trying to kill you?" Charlotte asked, eyes so angry. "He's trying to fucking kill you both."
"He's not, Charlotte. We know you hate the guy, but stop," Sierra chastised, which earned her a glare and a mouthful from Chatlotte.
"You're a fine one to talk, Sierra. You're the biggest Luke hater. What happened?"
Before they could start to argue, Rolus stepped in. "That's why I'm leaving in three days. I want you all to work together. I'm not confident that Luke will come out unscathed, that's why I wanted to let you all know before I left."
Silence was all there was, his Council finally understanding what he didn't say out loud.
"But-"
"Not now, Charlotte. He's my mate," Rolus said, the heartbroken look on Charlotte's face a defeat to him since she was grieving before he even died. "Let's be hopefully, okay?"
Zachariah wrapped an arm around his mate, nodding.
"He's your mate, but you're our Alpha and best friend. We had you first. How can we allow him to kill you both?"
Rolus didn't have the heart to defend Luke. He was killing them both.
"Charlotte, please stop. This is hard for all of us. Rolus doesn't need your bitching right now," Sierra said, glaring at her.
"This is hard for you? I bet you're the one who found the cure!" When no one had a reaction to her exclamation, she looked at Rolus, then at Sierra. "No. No, Sierra. Tell me you didn't." The horror on Charlotte's face was how Rolus felt when Sierra told him she let Luke know about the cure. He was horrified.
"I was only trying to help," Sierra defended weakly.
"You were not. Now look where we are with your stupid help! Do you even know the extent of what you have done? Rolus is going to die because you wanted to help! Your help..."
Rolus lost his focus on his Council when realisation hit.
He was not ready to die. He was not ready for Luke and his reunion to be cut short. He wanted a full life with his mate. He wanted a full life with Luke by his side. He just had him back for goodness sake!
He sat down on the couch, head in his hands. His heart and head were heavy.
What was wrong with spending the time they had together instead of chasing after a cure that was likely to kill both of them?
Rolus understood that Luke didn't feel the mate bond; he understood that's the way he was born. He understood that Luke didn't have the security of the mate bond and had to take Rolus' word for it. He understood so much and was willing to let him kill them, but he didn't want to die.
Rolus did not want to die.
________Rolus went back to Luke when he started to feel the pain snd discomfort of being away from each other for too long.
Sierra and Charlotte were mad at each other, but there was nothing Rolus could do. He didn't want to do anything. He was stressed as it was.
He drove back to Luke. The mood at Black Moon was so somber Rolus wanted to turn right back and go to his Pack.
When he walked into the Pack House, no one was on sight. It's been like that since they announced to the Pack about the cure and the possibilities.
He could feel Luke's anxiety before he could even see him. He was still in his office, laptop open and a frown on his face.
