Make it up

"So, Maxwell," Zayden started as soon as I placed the tray of snacks on the table, "It's been a while since I've spoken to you, hasn't it?"

"So, Maxwell," Zayden started as soon as I placed the tray of snacks on the table, "It's been a while since I've spoken to you, hasn't it?"

Maxwell had an unfathomable expression on his face and for some reason, it didn't look friendly in the least. He kept breaking eye-contact with Zayden and fidgeted with his keys.

"Yeah, it has," He curtly said.

I sat down beside Zayden, maintaining a comfortable distance between us.

I didn't recall Maxwell being this disinterested in a conversation. The awkwardness only increased and I couldn't help but feel embarrassed infront of Zayden. Maxwell was important to me, but Zayden was family to me. I needed him more.

"Is everything alright?" Asked Zayden, softly.

Maxwell, sitting opposite to us, leaned back on the couch, giving a smug little smile, "None of your business?"

I couldn't believe my senses anymore. No matter how much I speculate, I could not figure out the reason for his sudden hostility.

I glanced over to Zayden, worriedly.

"Well," He stood up, alerting me, "There seems to be an issue beyond my guess. I'll leave you two alone now."

With that, Zayden excused himself and headed up the staircase, without sparing me a glance. On the way, he removed his coat and tossed it on the staircase railing.

I turned to face Maxwell, maintaining my calm, "What's wrong with you?"

"What?" He shot back, "I didn't do anything wrong. I just told him to stay out of my personal matter."

I suppressed the urge to clench my fists.

"There's a way to tell that," I spoke out, and his smirk grew bigger, "I understand you're still upset, but that's no way to talk to someone. You can't show your frustration on others."

From his expressions, I knew he wasn't thinking about Ruby anymore.

"Getting all protective of your little husband, huh?" He mocked, cocking his head, "Looks like you're already smitten by that jerk your parents forced you to get married to."

My head was in a turmoil, but he was only doing this to get a reaction out of me. They all do. But he won't be getting any.

"Maxwell," I warned, "Don't change the subject."

"And you don't tell me what to do," He retorted, "Y'all are absolutely pathetic. Each and every one of you. People like you have no sense of direction and preach what you do not practice."

All that fell out of his rude lips were nothing but nonsensical words. He was blinded by his anger and such a man was beyond control. A wild animal.

He stood up, "I'm leaving."
