A marriage is like a rose; a romantic keepsake having the combination of thorns and petals. The red hue of the petals symbolizes love, and passion and is soft to touch. The thorns that lay on the stem, however, represent adversity and sacrifice.

With a sigh, I gathered the remaining documents from the table and settled on the floor, opting out of using the couch for today. I gobbled up my dinner like a hungry canine tonight, and although I could almost hear my mother's reprimand for such poor etiquette, it brought a laugh to Melina.
We didn't usually share such moments together and remembering it lit up my mood.
I put on my glasses and picked up a pen mindlessly lying on the table.
"Zay?" I heard a soft voice and turned towards its direction.
Melina, changed into her pajamas, slowly walked up to me with a blanket in her hand. She took a glimpse of my documents and settled on the couch, directly above where I sat.
I went back to reading my documents, "Shouldn't you be asleep by now?"
"I wasn't able to fall asleep," She said, but it came out like a whine, "Why are you still working?"
I felt her scooting closer until her knee touched my shoulder, "I won't have time to check upon these papers tomorrow. I might as well finish these off by midnight."
All I received was silence in return and it didn't appear to me as a comforting one. I craned my neck to face her, and I met her blank countenance that stared back at me. My eyebrows furrowed at her lack of response, and I reached out for her hand.
"What's wrong?" I asked, caressing her little fingers.
She pressed her lips in worry, lowering her gaze to her hand that I held, "Staying up late isn't good for your health, you know? You need to rest."
I brought her hand close to my lips and began placing tender kisses on each of her fingers, "Don't worry too much about me, I'll be done with these in no time. You go get some sleep, alright?"
"If you say so. . ." She trailed off, softly smiling at me.
I returned to scrutinizing the documents, puffing my cheeks to blow out air. I could've asked Ben to handle these, but I've already troubled him last week with severe paperwork. I'm pretty sure his wife and kids would've been upset with him and would want to have a word or two with me.
I felt arms gently wrap around me from behind and stilled, taking in the new scent that greeted me, a scent that eased me so effortlessly. Warm breaths tickled my skin and soon, she snuggled her head into the crook of my neck.
"Go to bed, honey."
Lifting her head, she shook it in response and perched her chin against my shoulder, "I'll stay here with you."
"You don't have to," I pressed a kiss to her cheek, and she smiled deeply, "Please get back to bed. You have college tomorrow."
"Let me stay here for a while!" She insisted, and I knew there was nothing that could stop her from doing what she wanted to.
