Chapter 2
Lindsay POV
I walked into AP Stat, glad that I don’t have this class with Seth; there’s only so much of that boy than I can take. No matter how many times I ask myself why he acted the way he did at the end of English, my mind comes up blank; I will never be able to understand Seth Matthews. I don’t even think that Cole can understand him, and that’s saying something, considering that they’re brothers.
The class ended quickly, like it always does, and I headed to chemistry when the bell rang. I walked inside the classroom, looking for Cole. I glanced around for him, my excitement dropping when I couldn’t find him. I sat down and wrote the objective and warm-up and answered the questions.
Right when the bell rang, I saw Cole walk into the classroom, taking his seat in the back of the room. No wonder why I wasn’t able to find him. Mr. Jay started class and gave us a worksheet to do. I was halfway done the paper when a crumpled ball of paper landed on my desk.
I looked up to see who would give me a note, or to see if the person who threw it miscalculated and the note landed on my desk by accident. I turned around and saw Cole smiling at me, nodding his head towards the note. Un-crumpling the paper, I saw in Cole’s neat handwriting: Hey.
Hey. I wrote back. Looking over my shoulder, I checked to see if the teacher was looking. Mr. Jay was typing up a storm on his laptop, so I tossed the note to Cole.
What’s up?
Doing my work, like what you should be doing.
I finished.
Already? How?
Chemistry is my best class.
I looked behind be and saw Cole smirking at me from the back of the room. Rolling my eyes, I went back to doing my work.
At the end of class, Cole walked up to me with a piece of paper in my hand. Handing it to me, he says, “Here’s my number, so call me maybe.” Then, the bell rang and Cole walked out of the classroom, leaving me dumbfounded.
Later that night, I was sitting in my room, reading the third Harry Potter book, again. I was at the part when Harry and Hermione go back in time and are at the lake, when suddenly, a shadow flew across my window; it was too big for an animal or tree branch, so what could it be?
I got up and opened the window, leaning over the ledge, glancing at the ground and trees. Not seeing anything suspicious, I closed the window and lowered the blinds. I turned off the light and climbed under the covers on my bed, closing my eyes and falling asleep, completely oblivious to the pair of bright blue eyes shining from a tree, watching me.
The bell rang, signaling the end of English class. I stood up and headed to my locker. As I approached my locker, I saw raven black hair resting against the navy blue metal. Getting closer, I saw that it was Seth, glaring at everybody passing by him, even when they weren’t looking at him. When he looked in my direction, and saw me looking at him, he flashed me his million dollar smile. What is going on?
I reached my locker and entered the combination, pushing up on the handle.
“Hey, Lindsay,” Seth said in his deep voice.
“Hey, Seth.” I don’t want to sound rude, but I couldn’t help but ask: “What are you doing here?”
He smiled again. “I just wanted to walk you to class.”
Too stunned to respond—other than my jaw dropping—I didn’t notice it when Seth grabbed my arm and towed me down the hallway until we were halfway to Mr. Chace’s room. People shot us weird glances as we passed them. Popular girls shot me jealous glares, staring at Seth’s hand on my arm. People got worked up over the dumbest things.
We reached Mr. Chace’s room right as the bell rang. I looked up and saw everyone staring at us, including Cole and the teacher. Again, they were intently focused on Seth’s hand that was still resting on my arm. I took a step away from Seth, his hand falling off in the process. The classroom was still dead silent with the entire class staring at me, making me blush.
The teacher eventually cleared his throat, and all of the eyes came off of Seth and I. Walking up to Mr. Chace, I asked him of there was any work that I could do for him.
“Go and make seventy copies of these,” he said, handing me a packet. “Take Seth with you, and when you’re done, staple and whole punch them.”
Just before Seth and I left, a girl yelled, “Are you guys dating?!”
I blushed, my face turning red like someone threw a paint balloon at it. “No,” I mumbled.
“But you want to,” she said in a knowing voice, wiggling her eyebrows at me.
Not knowing how to respond to that, I left the classroom with Seth following behind me. We walked into the copy room and started copying the packet. When the all of the copies were done, Seth and I both reached for the stapler, causing our hands to brush.
Heat flared up my arm, surprising me by this unfamiliar feeling. I jerked my hand away, my face red like Santa’s suit. “Sorry,” I murmured.
“It’s alright,” Seth smiled. “But I want to ask you something.” I nodded for him to continue. “Do you want to go out sometime?”
I froze. Did Seth Matthews just ask me out? “You want to go out with me?” I asked quietly.
“Yeah,” he smiled.
“Why?”
“I need a reason to want to go out with you?”
I blushed. “What I guess I mean is: why me? Why not have a prettier, popular girl that you don’t have to be embarrassed to be seen with? Why me, Miss Nobody?”
“You’re not a nobody. People know who you are.”
“Name two.”
“Cole and I,” he said, smirking.
I sighed. “Alright, I’ll go out with you.”
Seth smiled. “Great. I’ll pick you up tonight at 7:00. We can go see a movie, so dress comfortable.
