Chapter 19

“Aright, why are you so happy?”

I looked up from my dinner to see my mother raising her eyebrow at me. Shrugging, I replied, “I just had a good day at school."  More like a great day.

“And what happened that made you so happy?”

I shrugged again. “Nothing really.”

“Really?” she asked disbelievingly. “Nothing?” I nodded. “Because when I was a teenager, I would say the same exact thing to my parents when I didn’t want them to know something.”

I put on an innocent face. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“So this has nothing to do with a guy?”

I stiffened. “Nope,” I shook my head.

“Uh-huh. Who is it?”

“Nobody.”

Mom still had her eyebrow raised. How does she do that without cramping up? “What’s his name?”

The eyebrow thing was really starting to creep me out. Desperate for her to stop, I answered, “Cole Matthews.”

I heard a clang to my left and looked over to see Seth’s empty hand with his fork on the ground.

Mom furrowed her eyebrows. “Matthews?” She looked over at Seth. “Your brother?”

Seth nodded stiffly, his jaw clenched with his hand curled into a fist. “Yup, my little brother.”

Lindsay, Cole is here!” mom called up the stairs.

I took one last look in the mirror at my ensemble of a coral sundress, white lacy flats, and a dark wash jean jacket, before grabbing my phone, wallet, and keys, and walking downstairs.

Cole was standing at the bottom of the stairs in a black dress shirt rolled up to his elbows, dark wash jeans, and a pair of black converse on his feet, holding a bouquet of white roses. To sum it all up, he looked mouthwatering.

“Hi Cole,” I murmured.

“Hey Lindsay,” he smiled. “I got you some flowers,” he handed me the bouquet. “I wasn’t sure what kind you like, so I took a guess.”

“Thank you,” I took the flowers. “They’re beautiful.” How have I never noticed how adorable Cole was?

“You’re welcome. Ready to go?”

“Yup,” I smiled.

“Have her back by midnight,” mom cut in.

“Yes ma’am.”

“Beth,” she corrected. “Call me Beth.”

Cole nodded his head at her, “Beth.”

Mom took the roses from me and Cole and I walked out the front door. We headed down the driveway to Cole’s car, a silver BMW. He opened the passenger side door for me and closed it softly behind me.

Once he got inside the drivers’ seat, I turned to him. “Okay, how did you know?”

Cole raised an eyebrow. “Know what?”

“How did you know that white roses are my favorite?”

He smiled/ “I really did just guess.”

I raised and eyebrow. “Really? Did Seth tell you?”

Cole furrowed his eyebrows. “Seth knows what your favorite flower is?”
