Chapter 8
Lindsay’s POV
Later that night, I sat on my bed, the sounds of thunder and flashes of lightning reminding more and more of that awful night so many years ago.
I was twelve years old, and my mom was out of town, so it was just Nick, Jake,(my twin brother) and I home. Mom’s boyfriend, Ian, stumbled inside the house, drunk out of his mind. Ian is an angry drunk, so Nick, Jake, and I try to avoid him as much as possible.
Ian’s voice rang up the stairs, calling for me to get him another beer, slurring so badly that I only understood a few words.
I knew that getting Ian another drink was a bad idea, but not listening to him would be worse. I walked down the stairs and into the kitchen, opening the fridge and getting Ian another beer.
When I shut the door, Ian was on the other side of the door, a mysterious glint in his eye. “Here’s your drink,” I told him, handing out the beer and avoiding eye contact.
Ian shoved me back against the fridge. Out of shock, I dropped the bottle, its shatter echoing throughout the whole house. Ian swooped in and pressed his disgusting mouth against mine, his breath reeking of alcohol.
Reaching up, I tried to shove him away, but being only a twelve year old girl, nothing happened. Ian reached up and slapped me. “You ungrateful bitch! After all I’ve done for you, this is how you repay me?!” A smile started to take over his face. “But that’s okay; I like it when they struggle.” Ian reached down and started to undo his belt
buckle, the metal clacking together. I struggled more, but his knees pressed against my thighs, restricting my movement.
“NICK! HELP!”
After a few seconds, nothing happened, so I blurted out, “JAKE!”
Right away, Jake appeared in the kitchen with Nick a few steps behind him. Ian’s weight disappeared and a pair of arms wrapped around me. Recognizing the scent as Jake’s, I leaned into him, tears flooding out of my eyes.
“I’ll be right back, okay?” Jake told me. “I have to help Nick.”
Jake’s warmth left as he let go of me; curling up into a ball, I hid in the corner, not wanting to know what was going on.
A few minutes later, I felt Nick’s arms wrap around me as he pulled me into his chest.
“GUYS, LOOK OUT!” Jake yelled, his voice full of panic.
I felt something shove me and Nick to the side, and less than a second later, I heard a shaky breath. Opening my eyes, I saw Jake standing where Nick and I were a second ago, a knife protruding from his chest.
Jake took and unbalanced step backwards, his hand reaching out behind him as he tried to catching himself on the counter. His hand skimmed the surface and Jake fell backwards, his head slamming against the kitchen tile, dead.
