Chapter 4

Seth"s POV

            “NO!”

I looked up and was shoved back, slamming into a tree in Lindsay’s front yard, the tree snapped in half under the sheer force. Looking up, I saw my brother walking towards me, glaring.

“I thought I told you to stay away from her,” he growled.

“Just because you told me to do something doesn’t mean that I have to do it,” I retorted. “Why did you do that anyway?”

“I’m not going to let you eat her soul, Seth.”

“Why not? I’m hungry!” I looked over to where Lindsay was laying, passed out on the pavement. I ran over to her and opened her mouth, continuing to feed.

Cole ran over, wrapping his arms around me and yanked me off of her.

“What are you doing?! Get her while she’s down!” I yelled.

Suddenly, Cole’s fist met my face. Glancing over, I saw his face transformed into our true form; it always gets like that when we’re hungry, angry, of feeding. “You’re not going to eat her soul!”

“Why not? Imagine what it tastes like! How it calls to you! Don’t deny it, I know it does! Take what you want, what you deserve!”

Cole roared and tackled me, slamming me into the remains of the tree, shattering it to altogether. “STAY AWAY FROM HER!”

“And why should I do that?” I calmly replied.

“BECAUSE I LOVE HER!”

I smirked. “Awww! Little Coley Woley is in love,” I cooed in a baby voice.

Cole growled and grabbed me by the throat and threw me across the yard. I landed in the street, smiling to myself; I couldn’t help it, he’s just too much fun to mess with.

Cole ran over to me, so fast that it would be a blur to the human eye. He grabbed me by the throat once again, but froze when we heard a gasp.

Looking over, I saw Lindsay awake, clutching her head. The spot where her head previously rested again the pavement was covered in her blood. Cole rushed over to her as fast as he could without blowing his cover.

I smirked at him, leaving Cole to deal with “his girl.”

Cole POV

Lindsay woke up with a gasp. She sat up and rested her head in her hand, wincing. I ran over to her and asked “Are you okay?” As soon as the sentence was out of my mouth, I mentally slapped myself. What kind of question is that? Of course she isn’t okay—she slammed her head against the pavement, you idiot!

“Yeah, I’m fine,” she said, wincing again. Lindsay pulled her hand away from her head; when she saw it covered in fresh blood, she gasped and whimpered, shocked from her blood loss.

“C’mon, we should go to the hospital,” I said, concerned.

            “No, I’m fine.”

“No, you’re not, Lindsay. Look at your hand.”

            “I’ll be fine,” she insisted.

                           “Lindsay…”

“I’m fine, Cole.” She got up and took a few steps, wobbling on each one. On her last step, she lost her balance and would have collapsed again if I hadn’t caught her.

“C’mon, we’re going to the hospital.”

*****

I sat in the waiting room of the hospital, thinking. What should I do? I could erase her memory, but I’ve already done that too many times. I would always go to Lindsay when I would have to talk to someone, but I would erase her memory so nobody would find out about Seth and I. Would I want to do that again? Can I trust her enough to not tell anyone? Should I do that? Should I erase her memory? I don’t want to scare her away from me, but at the same time, I don’t want anyone finding out about ratamons.

Ratamons. That’s what Seth and I are. Monsters. We feed on living souls to survive, but unlike Seth, I feed on animals instead of humans. Of course, Seth continuously makes squirrel and bunny jokes about me, but I don’t care; I’m saving lives instead of ending them, like Seth. It makes me feel like less of a monster and more of a human.

Seth doesn’t care about all of the people he’s killing. He always says “the world would be better off with less people like that.” But Seth just eats souls, not caring about the consequences. He doesn’t care about the person themselves, like if they have a family, if they’re married and have kids, or whoever it is that they’re leaving behind, because all he thinks about is himself; its all about Seth, nobody else is important enough.    When Seth turned, all of his humanity was sucked out of him. Everybody knows that, but the question is: where did it go?
