NEW YORK CITY | JOCELYNS CONCERT
The crowd's roar was deafening, a tidal wave of sound that crashed against the stage and threatened to sweep Jocelyn away, sometimes she prayed that it actually would. The lights were blinding, hot against her skin, as she stood at the center of the universe for one brief, electrifying moment. The opening chords of her latest single, "Fill The Void" filled the arena, and the world faded into a blur of flashing lights and adoring faces. This was her sanctuary, her battlefield, and her home. The only place she felt truly loved and appreciated. She let the music take over, every note a reminder of how far she has come. From a nobody in a small town to the pop princess standing before thousands, every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every doubt and fear was worth it for this.
As the final notes echoed through the stadium, she began to be lowered back down from the stage. The stage lights dimmed, and she whispered into the microphone, "Thank you, New York! I love you all!"
The roar of the crowd was the last thing she heard before the lights went out and she was whisked offstage, surrounded by her team. Backstage, the air was cooler, quieter, a stark contrast to the electric energy of the performance. She took a deep breath, heart still racing, and leaned against the wall.
"Great show, Joce," her manager Julia, said, handing her a bottle of water. "The reviews are already pouring in, and they're all stellar."
"Thanks, Julia," she replied, taking a long sip. "But right now, all I want is a hot shower and a goodnight's sleep."
Julia laughed, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "You've got it, superstar. Just one more interview and then you're free for the night."
Julia was 45 years old. She was a failed pop-star from the early 2000's. She got into a bunch of scandals (that she still won't talk about today) that led her short-lived career to sink instantly. She lives through Jocelyn.
She groaned inwardly but nodded. It was all part of the job, and she wouldn't trade it for anything. As she headed to the interview room, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was missing. Fame and fortune were incredible, but they couldn't fill the void that had been growing inside of her for years.
After an hour of being asked the same goddamn questions she's always asked, she arrived back at her 5 star hotel room, which towered over New York City. She instantly hops in the shower, then packs for the next city.
There was something eerie, and extremely depressing about going from thousands of adoring fans screaming your name, to only the sounds of your own breathing and air conditioning of the empty hotel room. She had it all right? Right? Then why did she feel so empty?
Soon her thoughts were interrupted by the piercing text message notification from Julia. "My God, does that woman ever sleep?" Jocelyn whispered to herself.
