Stepping out of the shadows and into the sunlight on the deck of the now-docked ship, Katara squinted as her eyes adjusted. She was dressed plainly—thick, dark, baggy red pants tucked into mid-calf leather boots, their weight dragging against the metal floor with every step. A bright red long-sleeved shirt hung loose on her frame, practical enough for the snowy climate she would soon face. Her hair was pulled into a single high ponytail, though she'd taken the time to shape the two familiar hair loops that framed her face, a remnant of the girl she once was.

The air was crisp, cool, biting—but to Katara it felt like freedom. She drew in a long breath, letting it fill her chest, the sharpness grounding her. The South Pole wasn't far now; she could almost smell the snow on the wind, taste the salt of home riding on the sea spray.

Her gaze swept outward, adjusting to the brightness, until a sudden flash of light cut across her eyes. She blinked, lifting a hand. The glare wasn't from the ocean—it reflected upward, sharp and golden, from the dock below.

Katara's brows furrowed as she leaned forward, following the light's path. It glinted again, catching her square in the eyes before vanishing with the shift of the breeze. Her focus narrowed.

A gold button.

The polished surface shone so brightly it had temporarily blinded her. Blinking away the white spots dancing in her vision, she followed the line upward—past the gleam of crimson armor, over the cut of a strong shoulder—until her eyes fixed on the man wearing it.

She could see Zuko standing below with a few guards, their heads bent in conversation. None of them seemed to notice her lingering gaze from above. Still, Katara knew sooner or later she would have to face him. The thought made her chest tighten.

Taking a breath, she placed her foot onto the ramp. Each step down was heavy with the weight of uncertainty, her pulse quickening at what the next few hours might bring.

Hearing footsteps against the metal ramp, Zuko turned his head only to be taken aback by what he saw. Katara was fully awake and alert, her beautiful angelic eyes widening with hope. Her smile beem to him, seeming to shine from her gentle soul within. No matter how many times he saw her, the alluring image of Katara was enough for his downfall.
