Zuko
1 month later

The air was warm, and everything I had dreamt of over the past few years was finally happening. The rose-colored glasses I once scoffed at... they were finally mine to wear.

I stepped into the palace courtyard, where hundreds of people had gathered, lining the paths, eager to catch a glimpse of me.

As I walked past the large golden gong, a Fire Sage struck it hard behind me. The resonant boom captured the crowd's attention, and all eyes turned upward, waiting to see the man who would soon be crowned Fire Lord.

I stood tall, posture rising naturally as I came fully into view. The crowd erupted in cheers—young and old, all of them standing in the hot sun, smiling, proud to be here. Proud of me.

I can't remember the last time I was this happy.

Kneeling, I felt my breath quicken to match the rhythm of my heart.

"By decree of the late Fire Lord Ozai, I now crown you Fire Lord Zuko. All hail Fire Lord Zuko!"

The circle of Fire Sages bowed low as I rose to my feet. The cheers intensified—my people, my guards, my nation.

I raised my hand in a wave, surprised by how natural it all felt. Like the crown had always been waiting for me to grow into it.

Looking around... I saw the adoration, the celebration.
But not a single member of my family.

Later that day

My nerves felt etched into my veins as I made my way down the hall of the prison tower.
Would he accept my apology?

I swallowed the lump forming in the back of my throat, my stomach churning with dread. Since Ozai's death, Uncle hadn't spoken a word to me. Every day, he sat silently with his back turned, unmoving. Before the coronation, I didn't have the power to free him.

But now... I do.

I paused in front of the door, inhaling deeply and exhaling even slower, trying to brace myself. Act excited, I told myself. Maybe then he'll be excited too. Reverse psychology, right?

"Uncle, you're free—"

OH MY—

The breath was ripped from my lungs. My eyes widened, locking onto the scene in front of me.

It felt like I stood there for hours, frozen in disbelief.
In reality, it was only seconds.

"HELP! HELP!"

My voice felt strangled, my screams swallowed by the cold stone walls.

There, in the middle of the cell, lay my uncle—still. His lips were tinged blue. His face was slack. A cup of tea lay on its side, only inches from his outstretched fingers, its contents spilled across the floor like a final, unanswered whisper.

My head throbbed. A dull buzzing rang in my ears, making it hard to tell which way was up. I squeezed my eyes shut, desperate to steady the spinning in my skull. Slowly, I cracked them open.

A dim white light seeped into my vision, sharp against a shadowy backdrop. The pain pulsed harder.

Wincing, I shut my eyes again, waiting... breathing. When I tried once more, it was still there—that same ghostly light, flickering on the edge of darkness. I blinked, slowly at first, again and again, until finally—
I could see it.
