3rd pov

Cosette sits on the couch, her brother leaning against her side. The TV played as background music as she messed with his hair.

"Oh yeah, happy birthday. I forgot to tell you earlier." Jim laughs quietly.

"Thanks bro." She says.

Their mother suddenly gets up from the other side of Jim, starting to two.

"Where's she going?" Jim asks his sister as their mom goes upstairs.

"I thought you'd know." Cosette says. "Maybe she's tired. I know I am."

"But it's only 7:30." Jim says as he checks the clock on the wall.

"7:29, but yeah. I've been staying up late for the last week, so it's fine." Cosette lies.

They quiet down as Barbara walks down the stairs, a small box in her hands.

Cosette recognizes the box to be the one their father had given her before leaving. She tenses visibly, but gently moves her brother as her mom approaches her..

"Cosette, I found this in one of your boxes in the storage unit. I thought since you've never opened it, you could open it now." Her mother says as she hands the box to Cosette.

Cosette looks at the box. She remembered what her father had said now. She's a bit late, by a year exactly, but it was fine. Cosette was sure of it.

Taking a deep breath, Cosette opened the box. Inside was a black ring, a spiraling dragon with red eyes. Cosette grabs the ring, slipping it on carefully. The eyes seemed to glow before she feels another presence.

Looking around, she sees nothing. However, she knows something's here.

"You think it's bad I was a year late to open this?" She asks after staring at the ring for a few minutes.

"What do you mean?" Barbara asks.

"Well, when Dad gave me this box, he said to open it on my 20th birthday. I'm sure it's fine... I just..." She trails off. "Thanks mom."

"Of course, sweety." Her mom says before Jim hugs his sister.

"I'm sorry, Cosette. If I'd known you were coming over, I would have made you a cake and-" Cosette cuts him off as she squeezes him in the hug.

"It's fine silly! You're the best thing that could ever happen to me." She says as she pulls him into a noogie. "I'm glad to be home. Besides, you can make a cake tomorrow!"

Jim groans before shaking his head out of her grasp.

That night, the family all fall asleep on the couch watching Gun Robot. Only, it was the first time in a while since Cosette had gotten a good night of sleep. It felt nice.

When Cosette woke up at 5:20, Jim still laying on her, she noticed their mom was gone. She guessed that she had to go to work or went to bed, so she didn't worry much. She gently moves her brother and goes out back, climbing the fence to jump onto the roof.

Cosette lays on the roof, watching the moon as it left the sky. Her watch would go off at 7:00, which she had set so she didn't lose track of time. The roof had and will always be her safe place, despite how dangerous it was.

A few birds and bats remained awake to fly around, but the bats soon left. It wasn't until Cosette felt like she was being watched did she get up to look around and towards the woods.

She spotted a pair of orange-ish yellow lights before they disappeared, reappearing soon after. That's when she realized they were really eyes. Cosette clutched her fists, feeling uncomfortable at the new presence. That's when she heard a sound and looked to the door that lead out back.
