"R-right away, Mr. Jupiter," the woman on the phone says before the sound of furious typing over the telephone.
Not long after, a file is sent to the Mayor's computer, and he begins to review its contents.
Looking it over, the Mayor slightly smiles as he looks at the not-so-small sum of money that one man owed to the city.
David Macamore's debt was in the high millions of dollars. There was no time frame for the payment. However, the contract his mother signed made it so anyone who carried the name of the Macamore family would lead to the payments for decades to come, considering that David was single for now. It would be safe to assume his debt would die with him if David didn't have a kid, which was difficult to tell.
Now, David could refuse to pay and declare bankruptcy, but he gets everything he owns, which is repossessed by the city, and while not much would allow the 'people' not to feel that their money had been cheated from them.
It had been difficult to spin the story; the only accurate way for someone to steal millions is to rob a bank realistically.
So, for the former Mayor to have robbed the city blind had to take more than one person helping them in order actually to get anything and not be caught like they were.
"Well, more like we were...." The Mayor mumbles as he glances at a chair across from his desk.
He remembers when Mayor Macamore offered him the chance to join the small group of key officials to get more cash for themselves. They thought they could embezzle the funds with no one else being wiser.
However, when the time came around, and they were found out, it was just a simple matter of finding a scapegoat for the group, so the people the Mayor had recruited decided to blame him.
They caught wind early about the police investigations into the loss of money, and they discreetly handed in small amounts of their shares of cash over to Mayor Macamore. After all, they didn't want to be caught, and some lackluster care in the transfers would allow the police to figure things out faster, but only on the Mayor if they did it right.
With a few well-placed tips later, the police were going to arrest the Mayor; however, when they raided Macamore's residence, they found that he had fled with all the money that he had accumulated with him.
Initially, when the police saw that the main culprit had fled, they began investigating the breakdown in the system and trying to find out the 'how' of the embezzlement.
So, with a bit of control from the media and some of the money returned from the now-former Mayor, the police force and people were satisfied with the outcome.
Now, placing the entire debt of what was owed to the people millions onto a now single mother and her son would be seen as immoral. Still, the people wanted an outcome to be brought forth swiftly, so spinning how the media sings is an easy way to get their support.
Now, the suicide of Mrs. Macamore was indeed unforeseen but, by all means, not that difficult to capitalize on.
What became of the original group that had helped embezzle funds? Well, they were being monitored to prevent any of them from questioning the morality of what they essentially placed on the shoulders of a ten-year-old boy.
If any of them wanted to confess, they would suffer from an accident. As a result, only two more people besides himself were still around. The now-retired bank manager and the still-head anchorman of the city news station knew not to let emotion get in the way of both their lives.
Plus, it was just some kid they would never have to deal with again; what was the worst that could happen?
But now it seems that Macamore's kid had caused his daughter some headaches, and as a good father, he would make him bleed for messing with her.
