PAST HAUNTS
________

Taehyung and the team burst into the room just as Jennie delivered the final, devastating blow. Jackson collapsed to the floor, unconscious and utterly defeated. Jennie stood over him, her breathing heavy, her eyes still blazing with fury.

As the team entered, they saw Jackson sprawled on the ground, bloodied and beaten. Jennie stood above him, her body trembling with the aftermath of the fight. She was sweating, bleeding from several cuts, and breathing heavily. Her upper half was clad only in a bra, the torn remnants of her shirt lying on the floor. The sight sparked something in Taehyung, an emotion he couldn’t quite name but one that burned fiercely within him.

Jennie’s eyes flicked to the team, and Taehyung saw the flash of vulnerability in her gaze. Despite her formidable strength, she looked visibly uncomfortable with everyone staring at her in such a state. Taehyung’s protective instincts kicked in immediately. Without a second thought, he shrugged off his jacket and moved towards her.

“Ruby,” he called softly, his voice cutting through the tension. Her eyes met his, and he saw the weariness and pain hidden beneath her fierce exterior.

Taehyung stepped closer, his heart pounding. He gently draped his jacket over her shoulders, the warmth of the fabric a stark contrast to the cool air. His hands lingered on her arms for a moment, and he could feel the slight tremor in her body. She was shaking, trembling from the intensity of the fight and the vulnerability of the moment. Taehyung's eyes softened as he noticed her eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“You guys take Jackson and go. We are coming,” he ordered, his voice firm and leaving no room for argument.

The rest of the team hesitated for a moment before nodding and moving to handle Jackson. As they left the room, Taehyung turned his full attention to Jennie.

“What happened, Ruby?” he asked softly, his voice gentle and filled with concern.

Jennie looked up at him, then quickly glanced back down at her state. She immediately took a step back, distancing herself from him. “Nothing,” she replied, her voice strained. “The mission is over, so I want to go back.” She tried to make her voice sound cold and detached, but Taehyung could easily recognize the vulnerability she was trying to hide.

Taehyung nodded, his mind conflicted. He wanted to comfort her, to understand what she was going through, but he also felt an unfamiliar hesitation. “Okay,” he said quietly, respecting her wish to leave.

As they exited the club, the cool night air hit them. Jennie looked at the cars waiting for them and then back at Taehyung. “Can us girls go in a separate car?” she asked, her voice still tinged with the vulnerability she tried to mask.

The request made the other members pause and look at Taehyung, waiting for his response. Taehyung met Jennie’s eyes, seeing the plea for space and understanding. Without saying much, he nodded. “Sure,” he agreed, his voice calm.

Taehyung’s agreement allowed Jennie to breathe a little easier. Jisoo and Rosé moved to stand by her side, offering silent support. The rest of the team, sensing the tension, exchanged glances but didn’t question the decision.

As the girls got into their designated car, Taehyung turned to his team. “Let’s get moving,” he said, his tone leaving no room for discussion. He watched as the car carrying Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé pulled away, his mind racing with conflicting emotions.

The ride back was tense, the atmosphere in the cars charged with unspoken words. Jennie leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes and trying to steady her breathing. Jisoo reached over, giving her hand a comforting squeeze. “You did great tonight, Ruby,” she whispered.

Jennie nodded curtly, her eyes still closed. “Thanks,” she replied, her voice cool and detached.

Back in the car with Taehyung, Jimin, and the others, the silence was thick. Jimin glanced at Taehyung, noting the way his friend’s jaw was clenched. “She’s tough,” Jimin said, breaking the silence. “But that was rough, even for her.”

Taehyung nodded, his thoughts still on Jennie. “Yeah,” he murmured, more to himself than anyone else. “It was.”

When they finally arrived back at the mansion, Taehyung was the first to get out, his eyes immediately searching for the car with Jennie and the girls. As they parked and stepped out, he felt a rush of relief seeing Jennie walk towards the entrance, still wearing his jacket.

Inside the mansion, Taehyung called a quick debrief. “Everyone, rest up,” he instructed. “We’ll go over the details of the mission in the morning.”

As the team dispersed, Taehyung caught Jennie’s eye. “Ruby,” he called, his voice softer now. “Can I talk to you for a moment?”

Jennie paused, her eyes wary and cold. “What do you want?” she asked, her tone flat and uninterested.

Taehyung hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I just wanted to make sure you’re okay,” he said. “Tonight was... intense.”

Jennie’s expression remained unchanged. “I’m fine,” she said shortly. “I’ve dealt with worse.”

He studied her face, searching for any sign of the fear or pain she might be hiding, but her cold demeanor gave nothing away. “If you need anything, you can come to me,” he said, his voice gentle but firm.

Jennie’s eyes flickered with a hint of annoyance. “Noted,” she replied. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to rest.” She turned on her heel and walked away without another word.

As she headed to her room, Taehyung watched her, a mix of admiration and frustration in his eyes. He knew she was strong, but her coldness and refusal to let anyone in made it difficult for him to get close. He vowed to himself that he would find a way to break through her icy exterior and earn her trust.

Jennie entered her room and locked the door behind her. As soon as the lock clicked, her cold facade crumbled. She slid down to the floor, her body trembling as tears streamed from her eyes. Hugging her knees to her chest, she cried silently, her shoulders shaking with each sob.

Reaching for the necklace around her neck, she clutched it tightly in her hand.“I am strong,” she whispered repeatedly, as if trying to convince herself. “I am strong.” Her voice broke, the words barely audible between her sobs. She stayed there, on the cold floor of her room, letting the emotions she had suppressed for so long finally break free.

Memories she had fought hard to bury resurfaced, triggered by the night’s events. Shadows from her past loomed over her, blending with her present pain. The assault had opened old wounds, and the weight of it all felt unbearable. As she sat there, trembling and vulnerable, the trauma of her past collided with the fears of her present, leaving her feeling more alone than ever.

It wasn’t the physical fight or the lustful advances that had reopened old wounds. It was the man himself. The way he looked at her, the smirk on his face—it all reminded her of someone from her past. The realization that Jackson bore a disturbing resemblance to a figure from her traumatic history made her heart pound with fresh fear. The shadows from her past intertwined with the night’s events, amplifying her pain and vulnerability.

She buried her face in her hands, tears soaking through her fingers. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her mind racing through memories she had desperately tried to leave behind. The past was never truly gone; it lingered, waiting for the right moment to resurface.
