Naomi took an involuntary step back as she took in the size of the wolf. The animal was taller than her, how can they be a wolf taller than a human? Yes, she has never seen a wolf in her life but she had seen movies and even the drawings of them she had seen were never this big. She gulped, the slivery white fur of the animal glistening with the moonlight and right there, even with her fear, only one word appeared in her mind: Beautiful.
Yes, the animal was beautiful, the silver fur and the red eyes, right under the moonlight was like a painting, a beautiful painting from the forest. She gulped, her fear momentarily forgotten as she stared at those blood red eyes. She wasn’t moving and the animal wasn’t either and she tried to hold her breath, trying to capture this very moment in her memory even if she ended up becoming food for it. However, despite her thought, she could feel it deep in her bones that it won’t hurt her. Just like she knew it wouldn’t hurt her when she was only sensing its presence.
Asher watched the girl, when she had said she knew he was there, he thought she was bluffing. She was just a human, a weak human, how can she know he was there when she can’t even see him. However, her next sentence had right on shocked him. How could she sense him? Yes, he knew he was not as perfect as his father in hiding himself, but he knew compared to a human he would be a pro. Even Anita finds it hard to detect him sometimes but she had head on said that she could sense him?
He had let go of the power immediately, it was already hard holding onto it while keep his wolf form and so he stood behind him her, waiting for her to turn and see him. Her reaction was what he had expected, there was no human who would see a wolf and not jump, talk more of a wolf as big as him. However, even though he had sensed the fear in her initially, it changed almost immediately to what he could easily identify as admiration in her clear hazel eyes. What? She was admiring a wolf? in the woods? In the middle of the night? Didn’t her parents tell her that story about red riding hood and the big bad wolf? Why on earth would she stand under the moonlight and admire a wolf?
He was still pondering over this fact when her next action shocked him, she was reaching out to him. Hold on, she must definitely won’t be thinking about touching me, right? He wondered but no, she actually took a step to get closer to him, her hand still outstretched to touch him. He had met many humans in his life time but this human is strange, like very strange. He growled softly and she flinched, withdrawing her hand for a second but then, she was reaching for him again. He bared his canines at her, hoping to scare her and he did, but like always, only for a moment.
“I just want to…touch your fur,” she whispered, her voice trembling softly with her held in fear. She held his gaze and he could see his reflection in her eyes. “It’s beautiful, and…it looks so soft and…fluffy,” she chuckled softly. “I just want to feel it, may I?”
It was like her voice was hypnotic because with each word she spoke, he could feel his guard breaking and he was relaxing. He contemplated letting her achieve her aim, he means, how bad can it be? And so, he remained calm, waiting for her.
As if sensing his silent agreement, she smiled softly and took yet another step closer. She was looking up at him, even with his wolf form, he was taller than her and he knew instantly that he would tower over her in his human form. She seemed to not only be petite, but short as well. Though the humans would call her height average.
Naomi could feel her heart thumping loud in her chest but she knew it was not out of fear but anticipation as her hand slowly went to the neck of the wolf. It stood, towering over her that she had to look up to meet its gaze. She is definitely never going to forget this wolf, not its height or its fur. When her hand touched its fur, she gasped, it was just as soft as she knew it would be. She took another step, this time, she could feel the air from its breathing on her hair. She looked down at where her hand was touching it, a soft smile was playing on her lips. She was hailing herself in her mind, she definitely must have a lot of courage to not only stand in front of this wolf but to touch it. However, just as she knew it won’t hurt her, she could also feel like she was connected to it, somehow.
Asher felt his breath constrict as she placed her hand on his body and instantly, he felt all the worries of the night flashing away in the blink of an eye and for the first time in years, he felt…peace. That’s right, peace, no fear, no worries, no nightmare, no pain in his chest, just…peace. He couldn’t even stop himself from closing his eyes, enjoying that very feeling he had longed for, that very feeling he would kill to have. It was like nothing else matters, not his nightmares, not the promise of someday losing control and belonging to someone else. Not the fear of being used to wreak havoc and bring evil and most certainly, that power inside him, that was always fighting to come out seemed to be relaxed as well.
The soft breeze blew on them, the moonlight highlighting their colors and Asher knew that he would give anything to feel like this for the rest of his life, to feel this peace and harmony. However, just as he was enjoying the moment, he heard the footsteps of someone and his eyes snapped open and he withdrew from the girl. He glanced at her, he could see the shock in her eyes at why he had to move away and he wanted to go back to her but the footsteps were getting closer and the last thing he wants would be to be seen with her by another person and so without any other action, he turned and ran off, disappearing in the dark shadows of the trees.
“Naomi, oh thank God,” Naomi heard and turned away from the part the beautiful wolf had disappeared. Justin was running up to her and he looked disheveled. “I have been worried sick thinking that I would never find you.”
Naomi stared at him, the sliver white wolf still in her mind. “Justin?” she called and her mind cleared immediately, “Justin,” she repeated, now in shock, “what are you doing here?”
“What do you mean, looking for you of course,” he chided, now he was already in front of her and he picked up her hands to make sure she was okay. “God, don’t ever do that again, do you know how worried I have been? Jesus. And to think you are so fast on your two little legs.”
Naomi chuckled at that. “I’m sorry, I’m used to running and I guess I got pretty good at it.”
“Don’t ever run from me again, I swear I don’t think I can catch up. I’m the footballer here, I should be faster than you.”
“You are drunk Justin, obviously, it’s why you were slow.”
“You think?” he asked with a soft smile and she had to look away to hide her gaze. “Come on, let’s go back to base, I’m sure everyone is worried now and we are pretty far from our woods.” He glanced at the surrounding trees, “anything can just jump out on us and we don’t want that.”
When he said that, the sliver white wolf flashed in her mind and she looked back at where it had left, a soft sigh escaping her lips as she wondered if she would ever see it again. She knows she wants to, and she would give anything to have that. “You are right, we should go.”
“Yeah,” Justin nodded and they both walked towards the part they came, going back to the camp ground and unaware of the two red eyes following them.
Asher sighed as he watched them leave, he could already tell that they would be safe as long as they walked back rather than deeper into the woods and so he turned and sprinted back to the vampire council. Approaching the old black gate, he saw a young woman standing in front of the gate and he didn’t need to ask to know who as her beautiful red hair already gave her away.
“That is the longest run you have gone for,” Anita said seeing the sliver wolf that was running up to her. She handed him a robe and he shifted and put it on, hiding his nakedness. “What happened?”
“Ran into human teenagers partying and stayed to watch them. The party is over?”
Anita nodded, “a little while after you left. So the humans, they were not afraid?”
“They weren’t that deep in the woods, I was the one that went far,” he said. “I’m turning in, you should do the same,” he added, walking into the council through the black gates. Anita stared at him with a frown, she could feel that something happened but if he wasn’t telling her, it means he didn’t understand yet so she would just let him be and to tell her when he feels like it. With that, she followed him in, the guards shutting the gates after them.
