During the last class of the day. Naomi sat behind Trisha and kept staring at her back, the thought that this was the last time she would be seeing was eating her up. She was torn between telling her and just letting nature takes its course. She closed her eyes and heaved a sigh, her heart beating loud in her chest as she zoned out every noise around her, including the teacher’s voice. She glanced outside, at the evening sky and licked her lips. Forcing herself to come back to present, she glanced at the teacher but the board was a blur and so she glanced around the classroom only for her heart to miss a beat when she saw the midnight blue eyes staring at her. She doesn’t know why but at the very moment, she felt calm, the worry that has been plaguing her all afternoon vanished and it was like everything would be okay.
She held Asher’s gaze, wondering why his gaze brought her peace within herself and also wondering why it feel like she had seen him somewhere, somewhere that wasn’t in the school, somewhere even before he joined the school. They both kept staring at each other, each wanting to dig out the secret of the other until the bell rang, breaking their spell. Naomi quickly looked away at the sound of the bed and started packing her books like the rest of the students. The teacher was yelling out a page for assignment but she was sure not up to half of the class heard him. Her eyes landed on Trisha’s back, she was so happy as she and Rebecca high fived before leaving the classroom. Obviously going to find Tiana, to complete their tripod legs.
Her hand shook as she clasped her backpack on her shoulder before going out of the class. She paused on the hallway, staring at Trisha, Rebecca and Tiana, the school self-proclaimed queen bees but were actually she devils. She knows a lot of students would think their accidents as good riddance but even though she hates them and would want nothing to do with them, she couldn’t help feeling bad that one of them would die and the others would be bedridden for some days or even months. She felt someone standing behind her and turned sharply to see Asher. She cleared her throat and turned to walk away but he grabbed her hand and stopped. “Let go,” she said.
“What is it?” Asher asked, his eyes going to the three girls that were obviously having their time. “Why have you been staring at them?”
“I don’t know what you are talking about,” Naomi said and snatched her hand from his, and flipped on her hoodie’s hood, walking away from him quickly.
Asher watched her leave and his gaze went to the three girls, he couldn’t help but feel like something would happen to them and somehow, Naomi knows about it. At that moment, her nickname came to mind, Psychic, why is she called that? He had told himself he wouldn’t investigate, neither would he compel her to tell him but now, his curiosity was getting the best of him and also the fact that he knows he cannot compel her to tell him.
He followed the girls quietly, enhancing his hearing to hear what they were talking about but they were only talking about driving down to a super-mart and getting some drinks to go for a joy ride. From their discussion, he understood they have been planning for the said joy ride for days since the one called Trisha received her new car, a monster truck. He vividly remembered the monster he had seen in the lot, he had initially thought it belonged to a guy and now he could say he had found the real owner. Only for the fact that he didn’t know girls love driving such cars, he sees it as something masculine but guess the human women have different taste. He shrugged and followed them to the student lot. Anita had mind-linked him during class that Micah had showed up, saying that she was needed at home so he didn’t bother waiting for her.
He was prepared to go over to his car when he saw Naomi from his peripheral vision coming up to the three girls. He frowned and instantly hid behind the car closest to him, his ears on sharp end, catching even the faintest of breathing.
“I know you all hate me but you really need to listen to what I have to say,” Noami said and he heard the girls scoff.
“What is the matter, Psychic, nothing important to do?” One of them asked and he didn’t know who because even though he could see them, he doesn’t know their names, except the one called Trisha, who is also the owner of the truck.
“Listen, don’t go on that joy ride,” Naomi said and Asher’s eyes widened in shock, how did she know? He wanted to ask her.
From the obvious silence from the girls, he could tell that they were shocked too before the one he believes was the Trisha started laughing and the rest joined her. He didn’t see the situation as funny because judging from the fear and worry in Naomi’s eyes, he knew the matter was serious. If he was curious before, now the curiosity was eating him up more than ever, how did she know? He asked again, his gaze on her. “What, did you have one of your crazy psychic visions?” Trisha asked and the girls laughed.
“This is not a laughing matter, Trisha, I’m serious,” Naomi sniffled and angrily wiped away the lone tear that rolled down her cheek. “I just can’t seat back and watch this happen the second time. It’s okay if it was just normal home incidents and little accidents but not now, I haven’t forgiven myself for Jeremy because I did nothing. Even though I hate you and you hate me, I can’t sit back and fold my arms, waiting for the news. Don’t go on that joy ride, Trisha, none of you should, please. You…you can go tomorrow, just not today,” she shook her head.
The girls stared at her like they were suddenly understanding what she was saying until Trisha laughed again. “Oh please, spare me that your crap. Do you know how long we have been planning this only for you to tell us to cancel?”
“I’m not saying you should cancel, I am saying you should postpone, please,” Naomi begged.
Trisha turned to her friends, “please, I am tired of listening to this, let’s go, it’s getting dark,” and with that, she walked right by Naomi and the rest followed.
“I saw you die, Trisha!” Naomi yelled and everyone in the lot gasped and turned to them, “and I saw Rebecca and Tiana fatally wounded in the hospital.” She sniffled, not caring if everyone was staring at her or not. “I have cleared my conscience, you can do whatever you want.” And with that, she walked away, all eyes on her.
Asher watched her leaving, too stunned to really think something up. She has visions? Is that why she is called Psychic? And moreover, who was the Jeremy she talked about? He could see the fear in the eyes of the other two girls except the Trisha of a girl and he sighed and shake his head. Just like the Legend say, when death is calling someone, they are always stubborn and strongheaded to those who would want to save them just for death to fulfil its course.
He came out of his hiding place, his eyes on Naomi as he contemplated following her or not when he heard one of the girl’s said, “maybe we should reschedule?”
“Oh please, don’t tell me you believed the nonsense she said?” Trisha asked annoyed.
“Not really but the way she said, it won’t hurt to just cancel, right? I mean, she said we can go tomorrow, there is no difference between today and tomorrow.”
“Oh come on, Tiana, we all prepared today,” the other girl said.
Tiana, a redhaired girl with beautiful brown eyes gulped and shook her head, “we can prepare tomorrow again. Come on guys, why did we start calling her Psychic, isn’t it because everything she said in middle-school came to pass until she stopped saying anything. This is the first time she is speaking up again in years and I will like to believe her just this once. If you guys are not going to listen to me then you can go without me, I’m going home,” and with that, she turned and walked by the shocked students watching them.
Asher nodded in his mind, intuitive girl, he praised before getting into his car, he planned on blocking Naomi on the way and getting the truth from her one way or the other. From Tiana’s words now, he could make it out that Naomi used to have visions and all his life, only pure blood witches can see visions. Only one problem, Naomi is a human, her scents spoke of it, so how can she be having vision? Seems there is more to this human girl than meets the eye and he was determined now more than ever to find out.
