LORENZO

"So what's your take on this?" Dr Vurner, the hospital director, peered up at me in an irritated look.

I was quiet to his question, just like I'd been to his previous three queries.

His nose flared up in anger at my silence, his eyes glaring at my nonchalant expression.

"Do you know how many patients we've lost in the past month?" He reached for something from his upper drawer.

I wanted to answer him; tell him that I'd been working on the case more than any other person but his anger blinded this conversation from progressing.

"How can you still not pinpoint the source of all this?" He dropped case files involving the past victims on the table.

"Is it really that hard of a task for you?" He threw another booklet at me, that I managed to catch from the corner I was standing.

"All you need to do is to monitor all the patients on that list to catch the culprits but what have you been doing?"

I watched him lean back into his chair as he passed me yet another condescending look.

"Hanging out with Dr Ashford as you please." My jaw twitched and my face changed at his words.

I subconsciously took a step to his desk. Why would he mention her in this discussion?

"Are the names on that list going to decrease day by day without seeing any progress?"

I didn't even want to argue with him that there were still victims outside this list he'd made.

He saw the judgement in my eyes and with that, he shifted the conversation to something else.

"Five bodies have been found decaying in our labs yesterday." He slammed another report on the table.

"How is it that you were the last person to hear about this? You were not even around to follow the case."

His throat must have run dry since he chugged down half a bottle of water while observing me.

Yesterday had been another of those days when I hanged out with my girl.

I thought of nothing else when she was with me. Her scent drove away all sense of reasoning in my head, her smile only heightening the situation.

How was I supposed to balance all these responsibilities when I all I wanted was to listen to her call me darling?

"Don't you know when to prioritize your job or is socializing what you were here for?"

The director went on with his questioning and before I could say a word, he stood up and walked over to where I was.

"You know I have the authority to transfer her to another hospital." I froze at his threatening eyes, the booklet I was holding slipping through my fingers.

Please no. I begged with my eyes.

"She's your distraction. I know that pathetic face you're wearing." He sneered at the power he felt over me.

"I-I'll bring results-" I tried to distract him from what he was insinuating but he quietly laughed at my desperation.

"If another month ends without any progress, you'll be on your knees begging me to let her stay." His wicked grin grew at the anxiety in my eyes.

"That's it for now, Dr Davis." He patted my back in warning before walking back to his seat.

I walked out after glaring back into his eyes. If he wasn't going to give me a chance to explain then he'd better not direct his anger towards me.
