Lucy's diary
Okay, this is my first ever time attending any kind of race and I think I'll need to bring noice cancelling headphones next time.
I mean practice and qualifying were loud already, but this is on a different level.
Maybe I'll get used to it...•

Dad
Hey. Wie geht es mit deinem neuen Job?

Smiling Lucy looked at the text, ignoring the knot forming in her stomach. Her finger danced across the cracked display of her phone, replying as quickly as possible. Maybe he'd text her back before he'd go to bed. What time was it in German?
Lucy

With a satisfied smile she looked at the two, grey hooks insinuating that he'd received the message, which meant her father was still awake. He always turned his phone off fully at night.
Looking up to check if anyone would see her, Lucy's smile faded ever so slightly. She hated how cryptic she had to express herself towards her own dad, even though it was necessary.
Tom Shepherd, the man who'd cut off his own brother for choosing a career in racing, would definitely not be pleased to find out daughter would spend most of her weekends racetracks for an entire year. Lucy was certain of that, backed up by past experiences.
When her father and his brother still had contact, Lucy sometimes asked to join Kyra and Dean on their trips to the Nürnburgring, but had always been shut down. Very firmly.
Even after her, Dean and Kyra had all sworn up and down that neither of the girls would actually be in the car when it got to the racing part, Tom had stayed stubborn.
A year later the older brother had decided to cut all connection to cut all ties with his only sibling. Thanks to that Lucy had lost contact with Kyra as well. Right until last year, when Lucy had decided to search her cousin up on social media and message her.
One of the best decisions Lucy had ever made, she thought with a smile as she let her gaze wander through the busy RedBull garage. Her life had really taken a turn for the better. Hopefully.
And technically she didn't have to lie to her dad, not directly at least as he'd never specifically asked what her new job was... Glück im Unglück.
Across the room Max was dealing with texts his own father, having received a few of them over the past couple of hours, but the Dutchman had purposely avoided them until the last moment.
It was about half a minute before the race started, so whatever Jos wanted from his son would have to wait until after. One of the only boundaries Jos Verstappen accepted: Races always had first priority.
