"We are made of all those who have built and broken us."

???. Red Room
July, 1995

"THE way you grip your knife allows you to have different functionalities," Winter started, "but, it also depends on what type of knife you have. For example: a kitchen knife will usually be heavier than a dagger or blade. You must make quick adjustments or else your assailant will kill you before you can draw your weapon."

Before him stood thirteen of now twenty-seven students, all who were holding the same dagger provided by Madame B. Vay was standing beside them on the right, her wings folded carefully as she held the knife out like all the other students were.

But something was different about the way Vay carried herself.

Winter hadn't seen it before because it had been so long since he'd seen her fight or enter in combat. Now her stance looked exactly like Commander Rumlow's, down to the fierce expression adorning her face. What was the most obvious habit of the Commander's, however, was the use of a rather inefficient hold—the reverse grip. Winter hadn't taught her such a tactic and yet she was doing so perfectly.

Something bitter and cold swelled inside him but he ignored it.

His eyes flicked between the other girls as he held his dagger out. Primary Handler Pierce—Sasha—had told him to listen to whatever Madame B and Dreykov said. All the instruction they gave him was no instruction at all. Teach them to be formidable with a knife, they said. There were simply too many ways to do so efficiently, so Winter was doing the best he could with the lack of teaching experience he had even though he felt he'd taught someone how to wield a kitchen knife before—

He blinked, the thought disappearing from his mind.

There was no before, he reminded himself, only HYDRA—only Sasha. And he needed to be good for Sasha. Otherwise Sasha would hurt and he wouldn't give him gentle touches and soft remarks and the stories—the stories were nice.

"Knife flipping will come in handy, so we will start there." He continued, tossing the knife upward then catching it with ease. "If your target manages to knock the knife out of your hand, it is up to you to keep the weapon away from your target as much as possible. The only way to do so is by catching and retrieving your blade. Partner with the student next to you—whoever intends to catch their knife will have it tossed by the other. From there, you will learn how to catch a knife thrown at high speed—like this."
