"From hopelessness within, the mind rises hope itself."

Washington D.C.
December, 2005

VAY was sitting in the corner of Commander Rumlow's house.

It was an apartment that was near the enormous building she'd been taken out of– he called it the Triskelion. The apartment looked nice– there was a little dining table pushed against the wall near the kitchen, a large living room, and a hall that led to two bedrooms and a bathroom. It had been peaceful when Uncle Rummy had taken her and started to cook dinner.

But it quickly dissolved into chaos when Uncle Rolly Polly came over to visit. He'd given Vay a quick hello before asking Uncle Rummy if they could talk.

And they did talk, but it didn't seem like Uncle Rolly Polly was very happy with Uncle Rummy's response.

"–it doesn't matter if you're getting a raise or not! We both agreed to work only in STRIKE and STRIKE alone! The moment you join Fury's little crew, Pierce is going to blow you the fuck up!" Commander Rumlow yelled across the kitchen.

Vay clutched her dragon plushie– the one Aunt Merce gave her– tightly to her chest as she pushed herself further into her corner. The handle to the wall poked her and she turned slightly to see that she was right in front of the kitchen cabinet.

She moved very slowly, carefully opening the cabinet door and pushing herself inside of it. She was lucky Uncle Rummy didn't have very many things stored in the cabinet as she half closed it, her eyes darting back and forth observantly.

"And why the hell would he think I would, for even a second, betray HYDRA?!" Uncle—Agent Rollins shouted, pushing Commander Rumlow into the wall.

"He asked me if I got fuckin' attached today!" Commander Rumlow snapped. "You don't think he won't think the same about you?! About STRIKE?! You'll be putting us all in jeopardy! Anyone on STRIKE that works, even the slightest, for Fury, is dead—dead!"

Something shattered and Vay clasped her hands over her ears.

Her eyes blew wide as Agent Rollins threw the plate of food Uncle Rummy had prepared. The plate was in pieces on the ground and Commander Rumlow had suddenly stopped talking. It was silent as Agent Rollins stood in the kitchen near the dining table, anger clear in his eyes.

Vay didn't breathe.

"I didn't fucking sign up for this." Agent Rollins exhaled.

"Welcome to the party, I didn't fucking sign up for this either." Commander Rumlow sneered.
