"Thank you. Bye." Claire looked to the pups and then to Mike. "What did they say?" "They're on their way to look around the house." "I'll look after the pups if you want to help them." "Thanks Claire."
When ten minutes passed, the police had arrived at the house. The pups were on the bed with Claire as they tried to go back to sleep, but they struggled. Claire decided to get a book to read to them to see if they would go back to sleep. They did, and she smiled at her adopted pups.
Half an hour later, the police had left the house and Mike had returned to the bedroom. When he closed the door, he turned around to see the pups sleeping. "How are they?" he whispered. "They're fine," Claire whispered back. "I read them a story and they were out like a light." "Thank you." He sat at the bottom of the bed and looked at his mate. "You really are a wonderful mum." "Thank you. I didn't think I'd be ready to be a mum, but I'm happy." "Like I said Claire, whenever you're ready, we'll have a pup of our own." "Thank you." "Since the pups claimed my spot, I'll sleep in the chair tonight."
Mike immediately fell asleep and Claire pulled the cover over the pups shoulders and watched them throughout the night. When the morning arrived, Claire was exhausted watching the pups all night. Mike woke up and saw that she looked like she hadn't slept that night. "Claire, stay there and I'll get you a drink of tea. After that, get some sleep."
Once Claire had her drink, Mike took the cup from her and watched her lay down again. "I'll take the pups. Sleep well." "Thanks Mike. But before you go, how are you?" "I'm fine. I've got my mum coming over to help with the pups while you rest." She nodded and closed her eyes. Mike and the pups left the room and went downstairs when there was a knock on the front door.
The pups asked who it was and Mike told them it was his mother. He answered the door and greeted his mother into the house. "Thanks for this mum." "Of course. How are the pups doing?" "They're scared, but they're fine." "What about Claire?" "She's not slept. She's been watching the pups all night so she knew they were safe." "Well, I'll take over and you go to see your brother." "How is he?" "Well, he hasn't woken up yet. He's still fighting." "He'll win mum. I know he will." "I'll check on Claire and then I'll be down here with the pups." "See you later."
When Mike got to his brother's house, he walked straight into the house and went to the basement. He saw his father sat in the cage as he held a flannel on his brothers forehead. "I'm worried Mike. He said it wouldn't take long." "He hasn't woken up?" "No, and now he has a fever." "What can I do?" "We need him to wake up. Jonathan, please wake up."
Mike then looked to his brothers hand and saw his fingers move. "Dad, I think he's waking up." He looked to his hand and saw that he was coming around. "Jonathan, can you hear me?" "Dad?" "I'm here." "He's gone." "That's good to hear. You have a fever right now, so just take it easy."
Jonathan then sat up and began to stand up. "I'm going to the sofa and I'll stay there for a while. The solution will wear off soon." "Your mum is at Mike's house to keep an eye on Claire. She's had a bad night." "Can I see her?" "Not right now son. Let's see how you feel later."
Mike then asked, "how long will the fever last?" Jonathan replied, "it should last a couple of hours." His father nodded and he stayed with him for the two hours. His fever faded after the two hours and he was still asleep. His father smiled at him and gently shook his right shoulder.
"Jonathan?" "Hmmm?" "Your fever has subsided." "Thanks dad." He sat up and thanked his father for keeping his fever down. "It wasn't a problem. You took the intruder from your brother and he's grateful for the help." "Where is he?" "With your sister." "And mum?" "She went shopping."
