Part 34

The glass of wine in his hand was cold, the deep red like dried blood in the dim light. He stood by the window, staring into the darkness outside, but seeing only him—the boy with haunted eyes, the one who had slipped through his fingers eight years ago. The boy who refused to fade from his thoughts, no matter how much time passed.

Then—the sound of the door.

Jeon Sung didn't turn. "Come on," he said, voice flat, bored.

Woosan stepped inside, his presence like a shadow stretching across the room. "More than some minor information, I couldn't figure out anything about the boy." He dropped into a chair, the leather creaking under his weight.

Still, Jeon Sung didn't look away from the window. "Tell me what you found."

Woosan exhaled sharply. "The boy moved to America eight years ago."

The glass in Jeon Sung's hand stopped mid-air. Slowly, he turned. "What?"

"I checked every police station," Woosan continued. "At one of them, I learned he'd come in with a man. They called his family. Someone took him home."

Jeon Sung's fingers tightened around the glass. "Who was the man?"

Woosan shrugged. "I don't know. But I followed one of the officers who made the call. Threatened him. He said the person who knew the boy's name died two years ago." A pause. "All he remembered was that after the incident... the boy vanished. To America , and then I killed that officer "

Jeon Sung's jaw clenched. "Do you know where he is now?"

Woosan leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "That's the strange part. I looked up every boy named Hyunjin, aged eight to twelve in 2010. Over a hundred records. None of them went to America."

A beat of silence.

Jeon Sung's voice dropped to a whisper. "That's impossible"

Woosan's smile was grim. "It's bigger than we thought."

Jeon Sung set the glass down with deliberate calm. "He's smart, Woosan. If he's alive... he's planning something."

Woosan scoffed. "If he wanted to expose us, he would've done it by now. He went to the police—nothing happened."

Jeon Sung turned back to the window, his reflection a ghost in the glass. "You still don't understand him. That boy escaped from Beol's room. He survived the forest. God only knows what's in his mind now."

Woosan stood, brushing off his coat. "I'll dig deeper. We will find him."

The door clicked shut behind him.

Alone again, Jeon Sung lifted the wine to his lips, his eyes never leaving the night outside. Somewhere out there, a shadow from his past was waiting.

And he would find him first.

Hyunjin's Diary Entry

The pen trembled slightly in his hand as he wrote:

That was the first trip I went on with my friend after you, Felix. It felt really good. I never went on trips in America, but Leeknow said you had to come with me. I wish this unfair life would never hinder our dreams. I wish you could have been with me and then you would have known Leeknow. He's so nice and funny. He always wants to make me laugh, but I can't laugh after you because it's unfair to you. He's all I need and I want to be with him. I love you, my angel. I wish one day I could write something nice in this book besides my unhappiness.
