Part 49

It was morning, and the girl crept into the hall with trembling steps, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. A flicker of fear danced in her eyes as she nervously hid her left hand behind her back. Her parents glanced up, their expressions shifting from warmth to concern as they noticed her unease.

Yeji's Mom softened her voice but couldn't hide the growing worry. "Good morning, my daughter...?"

Yeji's Dad kept his tone gentle, yet caution seeped in. "Good morning, Yeji."

Yeji stood frozen like a statue, her breath shallow. Her mind raced, her throat tightening as she struggled to force out even the simplest greeting. Her fingers trembled, her entire body betraying her nerves.

Yeji's Mom's voice rose with panic. "Is everything okay? Why are you shaking like this?!"

Yeji inhaled sharply, her chest rising and falling rapidly. With a shaky breath, she slowly—painfully slowly—brought her left hand forward, revealing the glinting ring on her finger.

Her parents' eyes widened in shock, their faces draining of color.

Yeji's Dad jumped to his feet, voice sharp with disbelief. "What is this, Yeji?!"

Yeji's voice trembled, barely above a whisper. "Last night... a boy asked me to... m-marry him... and... I agreed!"

Yeji's Mom gasped, hands flying to her mouth. "What?! How could you agree without our consent?!"

Desperation crept into Yeji's voice. "Mom, he's a good boy—a really good boy!"

Yeji's Dad struggled to stay calm, but his jaw clenched. "What's his name, my daughter?"

Yeji swallowed hard. "Hyunjin."

Yeji's Dad searched her eyes, his voice low and serious. "Do you truly believe he's the right person for you?"

Yeji nodded frantically, then caught herself. "Of course! I—I mean, yes!"

Yeji's Mom's voice cracked with emotion. "But you're still a child! Marriage is a lifetime commitment!"

Yeji's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Mom... that boy has no one but me and his sister now. He was Leeknow's best friend. When Leeknow died... he was terrified of losing me too."

A heavy silence fell over the room. Yeji's parents exchanged a long, meaningful glance—anger, confusion, but also a dawning understanding. Slowly, the tension in their shoulders eased.

Understanding truly is the solution to many problems.

After a moment, Yeji's mother sighed deeply, her expression softening. Her father rubbed his temples, exhaling slowly before giving a reluctant nod.

The soft hum of conversation filled the restaurant as Hyunjin sat across from Mr. and Mrs. Lee. The warmth in Mrs. Lee's eyes was unmistakable as she reached across the table, gently squeezing Hyunjin's hand.

Mrs. Lee smiled wistfully. "I always believed there was something special between you and Yeji. To think my children would be together like this... it makes my heart feel full again."

Hyunjin's voice thickened with gratitude. "Thank you, Mom."

Mr. Lee leaned forward, tapping his chin thoughtfully. "If we're going to their house tonight, we should bring flowers—and sweets, too. Proper gifts for the occasion."

Hyunjin blinked in confusion. "Why... do we need all that?"

Mr. Lee chuckled, shaking his head. "Foolish boy! We're going to formally ask for a girl's hand! Did you think we'd show up empty-handed?"
