Part 58
Our story, like all stories, must one day close—for even the sunniest dawn bows to twilight's hush.
The palace gleamed under meticulous preparation, its halls awash in regal blue. Elaborate sweets adorned gilded tables, their delicate shapes a testament to the occasion's importance. At the grand entrance, Mr. and Mrs. Hwang stood as pillars of composed anticipation.
Mrs. Hwang's fingers tightened around her fan. "Yuna... she's truly coming?"
Mr. Hwang stared down the empty path, his voice barely audible "After all this time, I can't—"
Then—movement.
His breath caught as his daughter emerged, her smile cutting through years of silence like sunlight through stained glass.
Mrs. Hwang rushed forward, hands fluttering. "Yuna!"
Yuna inclined her head, the ghost of old wounds fading in her eyes. "Hello, Mother. Father."
Beside her, Yeji offered a respectful nod. "Mr. Hwang. Mrs. Hwang."
Mr. Hwang blinked rapidly before recovering. "Welcome..." His usual commanding tone fractured for just a moment. "Please, come inside."
The hall buzzed with nervous energy, every guest holding their breath as the first footsteps echoed down the marble staircase. Eunchae appeared first, her sky-blue hanbok whispering against the steps, that striking crimson headband like a declaration of joy. Ni-Ki followed, their newborn son swaddled carefully in his arms, his proud gaze sweeping the room until—there. Yuna. His breath hitched, eyes instantly glistening.
Eunchae beamed as she glided toward Yuna, her hands fluttering to her chest. "You came," she breathed, voice thick with gratitude.
Yuna reached out instinctively, her fingers brushing the baby's velvet-soft cheek. "He's perfect," she murmured, throat tight. "May his life stretch longer than the Han River."
Yeji hovered just behind, blinking rapidly when Eunchae turned that radiant smile on her. "And you—you must be Yeji."
"Yes I'm Yeji , A thousand blessings for your precious son"—Her gaze flickered to the sleeping infant
Eunchae's eyes overflowed then, her joy too vast for words. She clasped both their hands, her touch trembling with all the things she couldn't say.
After a while, two servants carefully carried in a large shimmering blue cake placing it gently on the table with quiet reverence. As if drawn by an invisible force everyone instinctively moved closer their hearts pounding in anticipation. Ni-Ki stepped forward his fingers trembling slightly as he rested a hand near the cake.
"Thank you... thank you all so much for sharing this joy with us today." His eyes glistened as he glanced around at the faces of his family—faces he hadn't seen together in six long painful years. "We're going to eat this cake together now... and I'm going to announce my son's name."
Eunchae her own eyes misty handed him their baby with such tenderness that the room seemed to hold its breath. Together they cut the cake their hands moving in perfect unison. The moment the knife slid through the frosting a wave of warmth filled the air and everyone erupted into soft heartfelt applause their smiles trembling with unspoken emotions.
Ni-Ki his heart swelling handed the first slice to Yuna—a silent tribute a bridge between past and present. As everyone ate the room buzzed with quiet conversations laughter tinged with nostalgia and the occasional sniffle as memories washed over them.
