Part 38

What will fate give 18-year-old Hyunjin?
Will his life be what he asked for?

Let me tell you the truth never believe in fate
It doesn't gift.
It doesn't listen.
It takes what you love and calls it growing up.

A month has passed since Hyunjin's birthday,
and now Korea is deep in winter,
the season he hates most.
Once, he wished for it to come early;
now, he curses its very name.

Everyone waits for snow—
everyone except him.

The sweet shop bell jingled as Hyunjin and Lee Know entered, the scent of sugar and nostalgia thick in the air. Felix's mother looked up from the counter, her face lighting up with surprised joy.

Hyunjin exchanged a pained glance with Lee Know, who gave his shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Hyunjin, you're making the right decision, believe me," Lee Know murmured.

Hyunjin's throat worked as he struggled for words. "I wouldn't be here now if I didn't believe you," he admitted hoarsely.

"Ms. Lee," Hyunjin greeted quietly, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Believe me, I missed you both so much," she exclaimed, wiping flour-dusted hands on her apron. "Sit down, my sons!"

Hyunjin swallowed hard. "Please, Ms. Lee, can you sit with us?"

She waved a hand absently. "I don't have time, but if my Sam tells me, I will of course sit down."

Taking a shuddering breath, Hyunjin turned back to Felix's mother. "I actually want to tell you something very important."

"Say, my son," she encouraged, still smiling.

Hyunjin's hands trembled in his lap. "I might... or should I say, of course you will hate me when I say that."

Her smile faltered. "Don't scare me, Sam! Tell me."

The dam broke.

"I'm not Sam," Hyunjin blurted, "I'm the boy you loved so much a few years ago but then hated. I was your son's closest friend before fate separated us. I'm the boy who survived but couldn't save Felix."

Felix's mother went deathly still, her face draining of color. Her hands began shaking violently where they gripped the counter.

"Y...You!" she gasped, the word ripped from her throat.

Hyunjin nodded miserably. "Yeah. That's me. Hyunjin."

Her breath came in short, panicked bursts. "How could you come in front of me again after what you did?"

"I'll say everything," Hyunjin pleaded, tears streaming down his face.

"Everything?!" she shrieked, voice cracking with hysteria. "After all these years? How do your words help me now? I still don't know where my son is!" Her entire body trembled with rage. "What a damn thing you are!"

She surged to her feet, chair screeching across the floor. Hyunjin instinctively recoiled.

"Please let me tell you the truth—" he begged.

"Does someone like you know anything about the truth?" she spat, advancing on him.

Hyunjin cowered, arms raised protectively. "Please let me talk..."

"Does your conscience hurt you?" she screamed, voice raw with anguish. "Or do you even have a conscience! How can you stand in front of me like that, you damn one!"
