**Author's POV**

Clove always knew her life was different. With a mother like Qetsiyah, magic was a part of her daily routine. From a young age, Clove learned about spells and rituals, her mother focusing solely on their witchcraft and the power running through their veins. Qetsiyah often spoke of her past with vampires, sharing her deep-seated hatred for them and explaining how they had wronged her. Though Clove knew of her mother's intense dislike, she had never encountered a vampire herself and remained unaware of their appearance or how to identify them. Her mother was fiercely protective, ensuring that Clove remained in the dark about vampires and other supernatural beings. Despite being shy, Clove was determined to master her craft.

Her best friend, Evelyn Alexander, had been by her side through it all. They met in the second grade, instantly knowing they'd be best friends for life. Clove eventually shared her secret of being a witch with Evie, who, being the understanding friend she was, accepted it completely.

But things started to change when they reached middle school. Before that, it had always been Evie and her mother—she never knew her father. Tragically, Evie's mother passed away during that time, leaving them both devastated. Clove's mother, recognizing the bond between the girls, took Evie in as her own. From that point on, Evie and Clove became as close as sisters.

Clove's mother continued to teach her spells, but her teachings were strictly focused on witchcraft. She despised other supernatural creatures, so Clove grew up knowing little about them, her knowledge limited to what her mother allowed. Yet, as they both approached adulthood, She couldn't shake the feeling that things were about to change—something her mother's teachings hadn't quite prepared her for.

Clove's POV

Evie and I were lounging on the couch, half-watching a movie when a commercial break interrupted the flow. I was scrolling through my phone, barely paying attention, just waiting for the movie to start up again. The usual ads droned on in the background—fast food, car insurance—and then one caught Evie's attention.

"Discover your roots, uncover your family tree. Take a DNA test today and find out where you truly come from. Available at your local pharmacy," the commercial voice announced.

"Clo LOOK!" Evie suddenly shouted, nudging me hard in the ribs. I glanced up from my phone to see her eyes fixed on the screen.

"Maybe I could find out who my family is... or if I even have any," she said softly, her excitement giving way to a hint of sadness.

I looked at her, feeling a pang in my chest. Evie had always been strong, but I knew that not knowing where she came from weighed on her more than she let on.

"You really want to do it?" I asked, setting my phone down, giving her my full attention.

Evie nodded, her eyes still glued to the TV. "Yeah... I mean, it's worth a shot, right? What if I have family out there? Someone who can tell me more about where I come from?"

I bit my lip, unsure of what to say. The thought of Evie finding her family was both exciting and terrifying. What if she found someone and realized she didn't need us anymore?

"What do you think?" she asked, turning to face me.

I forced a smile, trying to push away my worries. "I think it could be great. Maybe you'll get some answers. And no matter what, you'll always have us—you know that, right?"

Evie smiled, but I could see the mix of hope and uncertainty in her eyes. "Yeah, I know. But... I have to try."

I nodded, trying to keep my voice steady. "Then let's do it. We can go pick one up tomorrow."

Weeks passed, and the anticipation of the DNA test results weighed heavily on us. Evie and I tried to stay occupied with our usual routines, but the waiting game was nerve-wracking. One evening, as we were settling in for the night, an alert popped up on Evie's phone.

Evie's hands trembled as she opened a new message. I sat beside her, my heart racing as I glanced at the screen. The message was from someone named Oliver. "I got a cousin!" Evie says

"It's from him," Evie said, her voice a mix of excitement and nerves. "He's asking to meet up since he's in town for the time being."

I leaned closer to read the message. Oliver introduced himself and suggested meeting up to talk more about their family connection. Evie's face was a mix of hope and apprehension.

"Girl, you want to meet a stranger from the internet? I'm not sure about this," I said, trying to mask my concern.

Evie looked at me, her eyes serious. "Well, technically he's family. He's all I've got left. I have to try, Clo."

I sighed, feeling a knot of worry in my stomach. "I get it, Evie. But meeting someone you've never met before—"

"—He's family, Clover. It's not just a stranger. If there's a chance to connect with family, I want to take it," she said firmly.

I nodded slowly, still concerned but understanding her need to explore this connection. "Okay. I'll support you. Just... let's be cautious, alright? We'll go together."

Evie smiled, relief washing over her. "Thank you. I knew you'd understand."

As we prepared to meet Oliver, I couldn't shake the feeling that this was an important moment for Evie. Whatever came next, we'd face it together, and I'd be right by her side.
