"Mom!" I said, letting go of Sebastian's hand and rushing forward to give her a big hug. She wrapped her arms around me tightly, and for a moment, it was like everything was normal again—like there weren't any secrets or dangers looming over us.
When we pulled back, her eyes shifted to Sebastian, and I saw a flicker of surprise cross her face, quickly replaced by confusion. "Wait, is that—"
"Tessa," Sebastian interjected smoothly, using the nickname he'd given her, his tone light but firm. "We'll explain everything later." His voice was calm, almost too calm, and I could tell he was trying to diffuse the situation before it could escalate.
My mom's brows knitted together, clearly unsettled by his presence and his familiarity. She looked back at me, her expression a mix of worry and curiosity. I tried to smile reassuringly, but my nerves were a tangled mess. There was so much she didn't know yet, and I wasn't sure how to begin explaining any of it.
"Let's just get inside," I suggested softly, glancing around. "We've got a lot to talk about."
With a hesitant nod, she agreed, and the three of us headed toward the entrance, the tension thick between us.
As we settled into the living room, I watched my mother carefully. Her expression softened, and she offered Sebastian a smile. "It's good to see you, Sebastian. How are you doing?"
My eyebrows furrowed in confusion. I knew my mother hated vampires especially ones like Sebastian. She always warned me about the dangers they posed, about their hunger for blood and power. And yet here she was, acting as if they were old friends again. I couldn't hold back any longer.
"Mom," I said, my voice tinged with disbelief, "I thought you despised vampires like him. What's going on?"
She turned to me, her smile fading into a more serious expression. "Clove, Sebastian is... different. He's not like other vampires. He's been a good friend to me for centuries, and he's helped me in ways you
Sebastian interjected, his tone calm but firm. "Actually, Tessa, there's something important I need to tell you." He glanced at me, then back at her. "Clover and I are getting married."
The room fell silent for a moment. My mother's face shifted from confusion to outright shock, and then to a tense, controlled anger. "Absolutely not," she said sharply. "I refuse to let you marry my daughter, Sebastian. I know how this works with your legacy, You would have to turn my daughter."
Sebastian held his ground, his face remaining neutral. "I understand your concerns, Tessa, but Clove and I have made our decision."
My mother's eyes blazed as she turned to me. "Clove, you don't know what you're getting yourself into. The process of becoming a vampire is dangerous—especially for witches. You could turn into a heretic, a vampire, or worse, you might not survive the transition at all. Witches aren't meant to be with vampires. It's unnatural!"
Anger surged through me, and I couldn't contain it anymore. "Mom, this is my life!" I snapped. "Your hatred for vampires doesn't control my choices. I love Sebastian, and I'm willing to take the risk, no matter what you think."
The tension in the room seemed to pulse with energy, and suddenly, the walls around us began to tremble. The lights flickered, and a low rumble shook the ground beneath our feet. I hadn't even realized I was tapping into my magic, but I was too furious to stop it.
Sebastian stepped closer to me, his voice soothing. "Clove, calm down. It's okay. We don't want to hurt anyone."
My mother took a deep breath, her anger subsiding slightly. "Clove, I just want you to understand the risks. I'm not trying to control you, but I can't ignore the danger. You could become something you don't recognize, or worse."
"I'll take the risk," I said, cutting her off, my voice steady but resolute. "I know what I'm getting into, and I'm choosing this. I'm choosing him."
There was a tense silence as everyone absorbed my words. My mother's eyes softened, and she let out a long, heavy sigh. "I just hope you know what you're doing, Clove," she said quietly.
Sebastian gently took my hand, grounding me as the tremors in the room began to fade. "We'll figure it out together," he said softly, his eyes meeting mine with unwavering resolve.
