."Have you taken your medication?" my mother asked softly as she handed me a plain metal lunch container. I nodded, recalling how I had swallowed the pills with practised ease when I woke up.
"The boy doesn't need medication," my father declared, his voice firm as he strode into the kitchen with the authority that always accompanied him. Despite his youth, my father carried himself with a gravity that made him seem far older. A pastor, strict and unyielding, his reputation reached well beyond our small town, and he ruled our household with an iron fist wrapped in religious doctrine.
"He has turned his back on the Lord and is now receiving his punishment," he added coldly, his tone making it clear that he still blamed me for my mistake during the Christmas church service. I had stumbled during the Bible reading, my nerves getting the better of me. To my father, that was a sign of weakness, a spiritual failing, and now I was paying the price.
"First day back at school, so behave," my mother said, kissing my cheek. The doctor had advised me to stay off school for two weeks after starting my medication, letting my emotions "settle." Now, I was finally being allowed back, though I wasn't sure I felt any more stable.
"I will, Mum," I replied flatly, slipping my lunch into my backpack. I knew what they expected of me obedience, perfection, unwavering faith. I was the next in line after my older brother, who had already failed his expectations somehow.
"Jessica will be happy to see you," my mother added, smiling softly as she handed me my backpack. "She hasn't stopped calling."
"Yes, I'll ask her to lunch today," I said, knowing it was expected of me. I couldn't avoid Jessica forever.
"That's good. Remember, Jessica will be your wife soon. The more time you spend together, the better."
Jessica was the girl my parents had chosen for me. Her grandfather was the previous pastor at our church, and our families had been planning our marriage since we were children. Jessica was kind, but we shared no romantic spark, just a bond of obligation. I had been raised to believe that love wasn't necessary, just obedience to God's plan.
"Make sure you stay around other students," my mother warned, her voice tightening. After my brother's scandal, premarital sex, a pregnancy covered up with a rushed marriage, my parents had become even stricter. He and his new wife were barely tolerated in the family now, only allowed to visit occasionally. They didn't want me to make the same mistake.
"I will," I replied, knowing my father was listening closely, expecting complete compliance.
"Good boy. Now hurry along. You don't want to be late." She gave me a light tap on the shoulder as I headed for the door.
"Straight home after school!" she called after me as I stepped out into the cold, damp morning air.
.
.The rain began midway through my walk, heavy and relentless. I opened my umbrella, already irritated that I'd have to carry it around wet all day. My watch told me I was on time, which was a slight relief, the school was strict about tardiness.
I wove through the crowded hallways, the press of bodies uncomfortable and chaotic once I arrived. Most students had gathered inside to avoid the rain, making the usual morning routine feel like an obstacle course. By the time I reached my locker, I was already on edge, eager to be alone.
